Phone Rep: "Sir, you must have your checking account automatically transfer $75 a month into your savings account in order to waive the $10 monthly service fee."

Me: "I was informed that having a college account would waive that fee?"

Phone Rep: "Yes it does but only for your checking account, both accounts have seperate fees."

Me: "Ok but I have transfered well more than $75 this month into my savings account."

Phone Rep: "Yes I understand but it must be automated."

Me: "So because I manually transfer money between accounts instead of it being automatic I get charged $10?"

Phone Rep: "Correct."

How in God's name do these mother loving criminals get away with this?!?

With fine print.
They are with out a doubt criminals and really, and there's nowhere else to go. BoA is the same, as is PNC, etc. and while I haven't had much problem with TD Bank, I may just have not incurred anything yet.

But for spite you could withdraw everything and go elsewhere.

I have multiple accounts with WF (formerly Wachovia). They've tried to charge me for having a balance below xxxx (thousands of dollars). Currently I have Checking, Savings, and a mortgage. When I remind them I also have a savings account that's well above their threshhold, they always become instantly nice and "sorry for the inconvenience".

Hasn't happened recently, this was after they took over my bank. What are you gonna do though. Hope you get the right CSR and plead your case.

Where would you recommend I go?

Try a credit union. I used to use one when I lived in Texas and they were 1000x better than any bank I've ever used.

Credit union. I have my account at one, and I don't get charged legalized theft fees like these.

Last summer they started charging me $8 per month for my checking account.

By signing up for a feature that moves a dollar from checking to savings every swipe I got rid of the fee. I rarely even use the card so it was basically a waste of everyone's time.

Last month they started charging me $8 again and I called up to ask.

The said they sent out notifications that you would have to again sign up for some service in order to wave the fee.

I asked the lady what happens next year when I have to add a third service and year after when a fourth must be added......she had no response.

I went into a branch with every intention of closing the account. Sat around for a while and the guy said he could change the account type and I wouldn't get fees anymore.

If I get another fee, I'm done with that bank. I have other checking accounts at other banks because WF wasn't established in one of the cities I lived in a few years back so any more of this charging crap and they can take a flying leap.

I was going to say TD Bank, but there seems to be consensus for credit unions. :D

Not that TD isn't a bank like any other, but for the 4-5 years since I dumped BoA, I haven't had any nonsense with fees suddenly springing up on me. I pay a 3. maintenance fee on a checking account and it doesn't bother me at all.

But after seeing some of these responses, I am going to look into credit unions...

I've had huge issues with CHASE. Hate them. BofA was worse, but I only had a business account with them. Wells is famous for nickle-and-diming you, but I have only had problems with their home equity group, who is just about useless and, I think, borderline ********. Wells has, by far, the best online services from my experience.

I'd be intrigued by the credit union suggestion if you have access to a decent one.

Wachovia was all over the place around here, easily the biggest bank. Then WF took over and anyu're hard pressed to find anything but them. There are a few, but not as many. Easily 20 to 1 ratio of WF to any other bank.

USAA is fantastic if you are/were military or you know anyone who is/was military and has an account. I got an account through my dad and sister and have never had issues with them.

I have a US Bank account. WF didn't deal in Kansas when I lived there so I opened up a US Bank account thinking it would be everywhere. It is but not really fan of theirs.

I'm probably gonna close my US Bank account at some point in the future.

I started the process a while back by opening an account at 1st Bank. Way better than any other bank I have been with.

Everyone is going to find fault with any bank. It's just the way it is. Just find a bank that will fit you and what you are looking for in a bank. Do some homework and make sure it's right for you. I use to deal with business accounts 250k and up and that's the best advice I can give.

Everyone says USAA is great. I still use an out of town credit union but they are tied in with about 4,000 other credit unions (http://www.cuservicecenters.com) so that there isn't ever a problem going to an ATM, making a deposit, paying loans, etc...
