How in God's name do these mother loving criminals get away with this?!?

Quite easily. The government loans large amounts of money to the banks at almost 0% and the banks charge their customers 3.5% and more to borrow. Since that is not enough :) they charge bullcrap fees to squeeze more. And if the banks make enough bad loans, they just get the taxpayer to bail them out. Nice gig if you can get it. To keep the gig going, you just take a small percentage of the profits and donate it to certain politicians.

Go to a new bank? Meet the new bank, same as the old bank. They are all the same. They only care about you if you have large deposits. Otherwise, forget it.

Wells Fargo is silly like that. I hate them. I once got charged 12.50 per transaction because I thought it'd be good to put a lot of money in my savings account. I wrote a thread here about it. But they told me the checking account would pull money from the savings account. Well, it did, for 12.50.... all the while the banker explained I could do so without being charged.

The key is if you argue enough and ask for the manager's, managers manager, etc., you usually get your way.

Just ask them to change your acct to a type that doesn't charge any monthly fees. You may have to put enough money in a linked acct to do so.

The only problem with a credit union is there aren't many ATMs and you could be charged a fee using another bank's.

I've never had a problem with BOA but I keep a minimum balance. You will probably get a lower interest rate for a car loan etc at a credit union though.

Some credit unions will refund bank ATM fees. Also most stores will give you cash back with purchases on your debit card for no fee. So I rarely have to pay ATM fees.
