Our season is over, even if we do run the table, which I think we have a realistic shot at doing.
What there's no realistic shot at is for the four teams ahead of us to go on four to five game losing skids and take themselves out of the playoffs.
The Rams are 4-6 right now. They would be the easiest to falter. Even if they finish 9-7, if they sustain one loss to an NFC team, we'll have the tiebreaker on them because we'll have 7-5 conference record versus their 6-6 record.
The Commanders are 5-5 now. If they sustain a loss to us, their conference record drops to 4-4. According to the tiebreaking procedures, that's what you use to break a tie within a division when both teams have won head-to-head. All they need to do is lose to the Giants after we beat them to have a 3-3 division record, which we would supplant at 4-2 if we ran the table.
The Giants are in front of us at 6-3 now. They have to lose tonight and then three more games to finish 9-7. For us to supplant them, they'll need to lose to Philthy tonight and later against the Eagles again or to the Commanders to have three losses in the division which we would break the tie with our four wins.
The Buccaneers are at #7 right now and would need to lose four of their next six. All of their four losses would need to come against NFC teams to have a 6-6 conference record which we would supplant with our 7-5 conference record. New Orleans and Atlanta could help us with half of that, but we'd be relying on Seattle, Detroit, Washington, and San Franpsycho to carry us the rest of the way with that.
Right now, at #6, the final wild card spot, are the Green Bay Packers who have the tiebreaker over us. To lose their playoff spot, all of the above must happen. THEN they must four of their next six, and all of their losses must have against NFC teams. They could lose to Atlanta, New York, and Chicago. They won't lose to Detroit and San Franpsycho.
To take the division, which would ensure us a playoff spot, the Giants would have to lose in the manner I detailed. Then, the Eagles would have to lose to Chicago, Houston, New York, or Minnesota. They must lose to two of these teams, preferably New York and Chicago, in addition to getting swept by us. If that happens, they'll be 9-7 with a 3-3 division record which we would supplant with our 4-2 division record and the two-game lead to take the division.
Face it, my fellow Cowboys fans -- we're not going to the playoffs this year. Let's enjoy every Sunday while we can because it's going to be one interminable off-season.
