Brandon WestKALAMAZOO — Brandon West sat against the back wall of the Seelye Center Tuesday, feeling small compared to all that was going on around him.

Not just in the vast and open building, occupied by NFL scouts, agents, friends, former teammates and coaches, but also by what Tuesday represented.

The beginning of real life.

"It's scary. Life begins now," the former Broncos running back said after completing his workouts at Western Michigan University's pro day. "What are you going to do with your life? Are you going to become an NFL player? Or are you going to get a job? What kind of job are you going to get? It's scary. I never thought I'd make it to this day this fast. It blew by me."

West and a number of his other former teammates ran, lifted and caught in front of a couple NFL scouts and the unforgiving stop watches.

West, who holds the Mid-American Conference record for career all-purpose yards was admittedly nervous by all of it.

"Sweating bullets," he said. "Just seeing your teammates, anxious for what you're going to do. See your agent. And, most importantly, seeing the scouts. That was kind of scary."

Realistically, West is hoping for a look as a free agent after the NFL Draft in April. He said he ran a 40-yard dash time in the 4.5-second range, but thinks much of what went on Tuesday is "overrated."

"Because, me, I'm a football player," West said. "This doesn't have anything to do with the field, but that's what they want to see, so you've got to go out and bust your tail ... try to show my butt and impress them, catch every ball, run routes."
