I just had a brief conversation with WFAA web guru Josh Harvey, which made me realize just how fired up I am about this topic. We were talking about all the speculation already surrounding Urban Meyer: Will he return to coaching? Will it be two years or three before he comes back? Where might he go? On ESPN, the studio host asked Kirk Herbstreit when he expected Meyer to coach again. And I'm shaking my head thinking "How the hell would he know? Is there any person on earth who knows the answer to that question, including Urban Meyer?"
Look, I don't consider myself a "things were better back when" kind of guy. I like the internet. I like having sports on television all day long. I like fantasy football and youtube and on-line poker. But I don't like the forum the internet provides for a lot of people who shouldn't have one. People on twitter were wondering whether Meyer would take the Washington Commanders job. The guy had just stepped down because of health issues - how is going to the Commanders going to be good for his health? And I don't like the fact that because there is so much sports on TV and the radio and internet that we have to do something to fill all that space. That something too often is nothing of substance. And I know I can ignore it if it bothers me that much, but thats not enough -- there's just too much stupidity and ignorance floating around out there, and that's not good for anybody.
If and when Wade Phillips gets fired from the Cowboys, you're going to see the names of a lot of "potential candidates" (actually, we already have). What does that mean? Some guy writing a blog goes through the list of former NFL coaches without a job and decides that they are potential candidates. What I want when I'm reading about a potential replacements is someone like Todd Archer from the Dallas Morning News, giving me names of guys he knows Jerry Jones wants and/or plans to interview.
Of course, that's only IF Wade Phillips gets fired ... and I am not speculating that it will happen.
