What a difference having a GM makes

Well, since a Jalen Hurts extension doesn't hit the cap hard in 2024, no %&^!!! Different story when it does.

We have a GM, he's just not as good as we'd like. Here's the thing a lot of people are confusing. That things would change if the Cowboys hired a GM. In reality, things would be exactly the same. If Jerry and son got lazy and hired a GM, that GM would just follow the owners standard operating procedure.

In order for things to truly change, Jerry would have to both hire an outside GM, and be willing to give that GM a long leash. One he doesn't give himself at the moment.

Yes but we have the distinct advantage of not having to check with the owner on free agent moves.

Jerry specifically pointed this out years ago.

I mean, he did lose significant contributors on his defense because he didn’t manage his cap space well and has one of the highest dead caps in the league. This is absolutely one of his weaknesses. His ability to trade away his scrubs for premium draft picks is legendary though. He also knows when to reset before you sink too much resources into an existing plan. I think that flexibility is important too.

Still, people use the past to misjudge the present when it comes to Jerry. Two decades of ineptitude does that, I understand, but the last 4-5 years I think he’s actually been a pretty good GM. He’s put the right decision makers in place for a lot of functions and has overall put together a strong team that I believe still has a fair bit of window left to really compete. This year I think he’s continued this improvement by making more impact moves in free agency. At any rate, Jerry and son aren’t going anywhere so it’s best to just be sanguine about it all.

No, we do not have a GM.

We have a GM, he just doesn't play the game. The offseason including the draft is a game in itself. Totally separate from the game on the field. The Cowboys are very conservative because they're not very good at it.

He is not a GM. Doesn't even resemble one. I don't care what his title is, he is not a GM. Jerry does not do the work of a GM. Not even a little bit. He refuses to watch film of players for the draft, did you know that? Doesn't do any work at all. He is not a GM.
