canty and spears are starting.

if carpenter and watkins really are coming on, then that's good news too.

so tell me: are you guys satisfied with how far kevin burnett has come? do you see him becoming a starter next year? if he's a back-up, will you be disappointed, or do you think he'll come along like bradie james did?

if burnett and carpenter really break out next season, we would have a sweet linebacking corps there with them and ware, ayodele and james. but if not...

i'm not sure ellis will be back next year, considering his injury. also, al singleton is a decent player, but you do figure that either or second round pick from 2005 or our first round pick from 2006 could beat him out, you know?

I doubt Burnett ever becomes a full-time starter in the 3-4. He can't keep his weight up.

I don't think Burnett's weight is a problem. He can't keep it up, but he has plenty of strength to play OLB in the 3-4. Parcells has stated he doesn't want to change his role up too much as it is because it's working well. Parcells seems unually superstitious about changing something that "works." Burnett did get a little time early in the season spelling Ellis at LOLB.

Whether he becomes a starter or not, I hope we keep him around. He creates incredible depth.

Burnetts only problem

is Ware

He plays both postions very well, and takes snaps away from burnett.

The way Burnett can start, is if Ellis, leaves, we move ware or burnett to the other side, and let carpenter be a back up

Burnett is a 4-3 WOLB playing as a 3-4 WOLB. There is a reason he plays the nickel and thats because he can move. He played Saftey at Tennesse before moving to linebacker. His size to speed ratio is outstanding. I'm sure Bill trys to hang to him until his 4 year deal is up. He might be wanting to be a starter else where but he is perfect Nickel Backer for this D and does add depth..

Indeed he does, but unless we somehow find a way to start him, he will be gone somewhere as a starter.

I'd like to step up some. But I suspect he's playing the role the defense wants from him.

I'd like to see one more hybrid to back up Ellis and Ware. After losing Ellis it's quite telling to see how important it is to have two rushers.

Burnett is fine, I'm not worried about him or Carpenter.

The trouble is, I don't see this defense reaching the next level without a dynamic player inside, which may be why they were looking at Carpenter inside.

James play has dropped since he got the new deal, and at his best he was a run stopper, and not a good blitzer or cover guy.

Akin has adjusted well to the move inside, but he too, is more of that solid guy you don't worry about than a playmaker.
