What about our Special Teams?

Nobody tends to think about this unit of our team, until something happens. I was looking around at google and pulled up some info about our units of Special Teams in 2025

The Dallas Cowboys' special teams were generally considered a below-average and sloppy unit in 2025, largely propped up by the elite accuracy of kicker Brandon Aubrey. The unit was the second-most penalized in the NFL on special teams, had poor coverage, and struggled with a drop-off in punt returns.

A breakdown of the 2025 special teams units:
  • Placekicking: Brandon Aubrey remained a reliable "cheat code," providing consistent field-goal accuracy to secure points in tight games. [1]
  • Punting & Coverage: Punter Brian Anger had a solid year, averaging 48.6 yards per punt with zero touchbacks. However, the coverage units struggled, often leading to poor starting field position.
  • Return Game: KaVontae Turpin handled kick returns, setting a league-high with 69 returns for 1,814 yards, but his punt return average plummeted from 10.4 to 5.5 yards per attempt. [1]
  • Discipline: Under first-year coordinator Nick Sorensen, the unit was heavily penalized and suffered from missed tackles. The loss of special teams ace C.J. Goodwin also took a toll on the coverage units

I'm not sure what rock you have been hiding under. We've been talking about pretty consistently since the beginning of last season. Subpar performance has left everyone wanting Bones back. Unfortunately, the FO didn't seem to prioritize upgrading the special teams coaching this off season. So once again we might be questioning the special teams play this year.

Ask the Rams how ST’s blunders worked out for them last season….

We were not just below average; we were at the bottom on the league in key areas like average field position starting for both offense and defense
that we brought back the architect of that says the FO as usual fumbled the ball

Nick and Schotty are pals so after the season ended Nick probably invited Brian for a "boys night out" and after a half dozen to a dozen or so rounds of drinks and a few games of pool or mini-golf or horseshoes or wth they do, they had a "good", short talk about what happened with the Special Teams aspect and the slate was wiped clean. That's just how I imagine it went down, though.

a HC should pick his staff but this is one of the times a GM should step in and say
NO

The special teams coach was apparently never in a hot seat capacity so we shall see if year 2 is any better.

An example of one of the big problems we run into year after year with this front office - lack of attention to details.

We must hope some of the middle and late round picks on this roster turn into ST monsters. Our punt coverage gunners have been mediocre or worse and it hurts an underrated portion of a key stat- field position.

Well now that Goodwin is gone it’s going to be difficult. Yeah ok.

Between Turpin, Aubrey and the pissed off guy, then you’ve got hungry youngins covering kicks…

Seriously what else do we need?

He’s under contract with Tennessee Titans last I checked.
Yuppers, I wouldn't want him back anyways, but anyone that can help get our special teams back in order is welcomed

Special teams coverage / blocking units were atrocious, how Nick was retained is beyond me.
Easier way of doing things instead of actually looking to get better

maybe we need competition for turpin and we surely need better coverage units

No doubt coverage was a problem last year. Kicking it isn’t.

I remember the day Eberflus was let go there were loads of comments that basically said “now do special teams”

STs are more important then some of our internet experts here realize; not just the punter and kicker. The coverage and return squads have been below par for some time.
Just one more example of the FO screwing up basic things.
