What about the 52 against the read option?

Imagine: DL: Ware Lissemore Ratliff Hatcher Spencer
LB: Carter Lee
Secondary: Carr Sensabaugh Church Claiborne

I'm not an expert, but I would think this alignment would be far more effective against the read option than the Tampa 43. Thoughts?

You'll play hell against a WC offense thou.

In practice that's going to be almost indistinguishable from the 3-4.

I'm not saying make it our base alignment...I'm just saying it could probably be useful against the team that employ the read option on a regular basis, like the Commanders.

Granted, it will look alot like it, but the responsibilities of the players will be different.

Against a read option, I wouldn't really think so. The OLB/DE will still need to set the edge and ILBs will have to come over the top to make plays.

Honestly, I think if you just play your keys and maintain gap integrity, you can stop that offense. JMO

I think the 4-3 puts a little less stress on your DE than it does if he's lined up as an OLB in the 3-4. I think he can be more aggressive knowing that although he still sets the edge there is a LB there to cleanup what he is hopefully disrupting.

Penetration is going to be the key to stopping the read option I think...

Having a healthy Sean Lee and Bruce Carter darn sure would help.

My philosophy would be simple .. if the quarterback intimates a run, hit the quarterback hard every single time. Yes, you might get burned a time or two, but you run that risk guessing wrong anyway. Just keep hitting the quarterback enough and I have a feeling the other team will start getting worried about their franchise guy.

Before anyone talks about "protected quarterbacks", this came up early last year with Vick complaining. The NFL basically said if he acts like a runner, he's a runner whether he runs or not. That's how teams started attacking Vick. They just went after him as if he was going to run the ball every time he made a break for the line.
