What an interesting thought...

Given that we very well may see a flood of juniors come out next year, due to the potential upcoming rookie salary cap, isn't it INCREDIBLE that we may have so dang many extra picks next year. I know we have an extra 2nd, 3rd and 6th right? We should also get some compensatory picks for a change as well.

This is a GREAT time to have stockpiled all of these picks, given that it should be a very deep draft. I wonder of the Jones' took this into account this offseason?

Anyway, I have not seen this posted before, and I may be off base, but I was tired of counting the seconds until training camp.

Incorrect. We have additional picks in the 3rd, 4th and 6th.

And overall these picks are not likely to make a lot of impact beyond being packaged to move up a bit or for higher picks in future years. Jones has actually been pretty savvy (along the lines of the Pats model) to trade for future picks, since when your team is loaded with all-star talent, not many rookies are likely to make the team, much less contribute. Better to keep stockpiling for the future when and if more bodies are needed.

Correct, I also think we are inline for 2-3 comp picks in the 5-7 round range.

correct we have an extra 3rd, 4th in cleveland and detriots trade this year, 6th from miami which should be high,

we have our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, we lose our 6th this year to Tennessee for adam jones and our 7th pick.

a compensation pick for julious jones, nate jones, jacquee reeves

we might get compensation pick for keith davis but im not sure, since he was a free agent signed by cowboys years ago.

so that should give us 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 5th, 5th compensatin pick, 7th, someone pointed out to me, even though julius jones signed but not much money so only a 5th compensation pick if we are luck, a 6th for jacquee reeves, and a 7th possibly for nate jones, that should give us 12 picks,

that in reality should give us ammunition to possibly move up in 1st round to get an impact young wr, with the extra 3rd and 4th, then we could package our own 2nd and 3rd to move up and get another good player if need be.

we are fairly loaded on this team now, only players i see cowboys losing next year are columbo, maybe one of the backup offensive linemen like proctor if he makes it this year, wade wilson, and maybe one of the wide receivers hurd, austin or stanback is traded, if amondola makes it, so that right there is only at least 4 players we might lose, so, most of our draft picks, i see being packaged to get a couple of impact players,

Hostile,

Refresh my memory. What was the basis for the comp picks. Julius wouldn't generate one, or would he? What is the basis for each draft position award.

You get comp picks when you lose UFAs and don't sign any.

We lost Keith Davis, Nathan Jones, Julius Jones, and Jacques Reeves, but we did not sign any UFA players. We added Zach Thomas, but he was released, not a UFA, and we traded for Adam Jones.

AdamJT13 has predicted we'll get a 4th for Reeves, and between 5th and 7th round picks for the other 3. I forget which. Compensation depends upon the salary they signed for and performance.

Overall, I think you are right (though not about which extra picks we have this year, but it's a mute point to your overall statement).

I think, whether or not the picks are needed, it is a very good thing to have the extra picks prior to a new CBA.

We may find some nice prospects in there. Who knows what a season will bring. Anyone who is a starter or backup today, may find themselves in a season ending injury tomorrow. So it's nice to have the picks to replace what may or may not be there tomorrow.

And better off, assuming that all is well on the home front (and no one is destroyed by an injury or bolts for free agency or whatever) those lowly picks make excellent trade bait.

Assuming that Pacman gets the nod from the NFL to return, that point should be clearly outlined. We really got him for chump change assuming all works as planned.

Michael Crabtree would be lovely wearing the Star
Well, I've been told that we will have scouts at every Tech game this year and that as of right now he is the #1 target of this team in the 2009 Draft.

Could that change? Of course. If we trade for a WR it definitely will. Common sense tells you that.

This guy would sure look awesome lined up opposite of T.O.. Would be in line to take over in a couple of years, too.

Make it so, Jerry.

I like Crabtree but is he really that fast as claimed because we have seen college WRs being hyped a lot but turn out to be slow in the combine.

This kid is the real deal. I have seen 4.4 talk and believe it. He could play in any style of offense so I don't want to hear any junk about it being the system. Not to mention that he was one of the receivers working out with Adam and Deion before Adam could practice with the Cowboys in the OTA's.

I think player flexibility and depth carry you through the season. Having compensatory picks can't hurt.

It's never to early to talk draft picks and we will have plenty of ammo next year to get an impact player or two.

I would love to grab Crabtree, but I envision him going somewhere in the top five to ten picks, meaning that we would have to do some serious wheelin' and dealin' to get er' done. I don't won't discount the possibility though because I love him as a player and will make a great option opposite Owens. We haven't drafted a first round WR in quite sometime, but at 6-3' 210, and 4.3-4.4 speed, Crabtree can make an immediate impact.

If we end up signing Roy Williams from Detroit next season, then I would rather spend our first round pick somewhere else. Zack Thomas is not the long term answer to th ILB position and we don't know if Carpenter will ever live up to his draft status. One player that will solidify one of the ILB positions for years to come is ILB James Laurinaitis. He is considered one of the best ILB prospects in many years and would have gone in the top ten of this years draft if he came out early. Like Crabtree, we would need to pull some trades to get him though.

Flozell Adams is not going to be around forever, and now would be the perfect time to groom his replacement. Michael Oher is a OT top prospect and probably the best to come out in a few years. He will go in the top five and maybe even #1 overall, which might put him out of reach. One OT that we should have a shot at is Andre Smith from Alabama, an All-SEC first team selection.

Wouldn't it be lovely to have a 3-4 DE that can apply consistent pass rush pressure? That is exactly what Tyson Jackson can do. Spears is a solid starter, but there is always room for improvement. Spears may not even end the season as the starting DE if Ratliff replaces him and the coaches move him to DT. Unlike Spears, I don't think anyone will question if Jackson is worthy of a first round selection. Jackson has the size and athleticism to be a force in a 3-4 system.

The extra picks will give us some flexibility to move up next year and of course the Comp picks will let us move up and still have a pick in a given round. We need to keep in mind that Comp picks cannot be traded but they still give us more flexibility. I'm liking our situation for next years draft and our ability to continue to stockpile for the future.

Even if one of the young WR's comes on this year and makes a dramatic impact we STILL will need to go for a WR in the draft IMO. Owens is getting old, Glenn is even older and on his last leg...so to speak. Crayton will never be more than a #2 and better at #3 and neither will Hurd. So even if Austin or Stanbeck break out (Both of them doing it would be too much to ask) we still need a WR.

I don't know much about this kid from Tech but I will keep an eye on him this season. I am from the Lubbock area and have friends and family who are huge Tech fans. They speak highly of him but there could be some homerism to their views.
