What are some ways that we can get more pressure on the qb?

Now I know the bump Ware took in in the opener set things back a little bit. Spencer is still getting comfortable starting and playing on 3rd down. It's also very early in the season. But we have got to get more pressure on the qb. 3 ways come to mind right away for me.

#1 Wade's version of the 46 defense.

last season we got a tremendous amount of pressure using this scheme. Now I do believe Wade is holding off on this for later in the season. Most coaches don't wanna show their full deck of cards right away and rightfully so. which leads me to #2.

#2 pre-snap movement.

we used a little in 2007 and a little more in 2008. one of the big keys in using a 3-4 defense is causing confusion. right now we are showing what we're doing on defense way too early. when I say pre-snap movement I don't just mean the linebackers I mean everbody. Not so much the linemen cause Wade's 3-4 doesn't do that like Rex Ryan and Dick Lebeau defenses. but the linebackers and secondary have to be more active before the snap. the linebackers have to do this to cause more confusion on who's blitzing and who's dropping into coverage. the secondary when not pressing the wrs have to me moving more including the safeties to disguise our coverages better.

#3 move DeMarcus Ware around more. have him come from both sides, have him run some stunts to the inside, have him line up at ILB and run a stunt to the outside. I repeat move our best pass rusher DeMarcus Ware around more.

so what are some other ways for our defense to get more pressure on opposing qbs?

I really want to see more corner blitzes. Scandrick or Jenkins coming off the slot position. I remember Henry getting two sacks in the Packer game last year.

If your secondary can't contain receivers for more than 1 second you can blitz until the sun comes up Monday morning, they will just throw the ball quickly.

At this point, Ware and others have just got to start beating the guy in front of them, you just can't continually blitz good QBs and good teams.

And this goes hand in hand with our corners playing 10+ yards off the ball. If you're going to blitz, I feel you need to be in bump and run coverage. Jam the WRs at the line to delay them a bit and give your team a little extra time to get to the QB.

great point. a little more bump and run coverage could help us get more pressure.

The problem with that is bump and run coverage is primarily a man to man defense and we dont have the corners for style of defense.

Wade said in his presser that we had problems with our man defense scheme. So unless you think Newman, Jenkins, and Scandrick are overnight going to become great cover corners, we have to start playing zone.

The problem with zone is that it requires more players to drop back in coverage instead of rushing, thus you really need to be able to get pressure with your 4 man rush packages. Currently we cant.

So bascially, here is the situation we are in. We cant generate any pressure without blitzing, but our secondary sucks at man coverage so we get burned every freaking time we blitz. See Scandrick falling on his arse after the slot WR did an out-in move on him for an easy TD.

The problem is, Newman was in press coverage when he gave up the Touch down and didn't even bump the guy at all.

WTH are you doing in bump n run and won't bump the guy or even touch him for that matter?

You want a better pass rush?

Then you need better coverage.

Typically the argument works like this:

The secondary looks bad because there is no pass rush.

The pass rush looks bad because no one can cover.

I'm stuck here.

When the Giants max protect your chance of creating pressure drops-- considerably-- no matter what you do.

You then have to count on 6 or 7 guys being able to cover 3.

That didn't happen.

I can't say I wanted him gone but he is and Spencer will have to step up.

Playing off of receivers has NEVER made sense to me. You're just asking for trouble. It gives them a free release off the line, either a quick slant, a hitch & go, etc. If you're going to get beat, get beat attacking the other team. Beat them up at the line, force them out of their pattern, and give the pass rushers more time.

As far as blitzes, I thought they were very effective last year running delayed blitzes up the middle with James. I think he had something like eight sacks last year.

No they don't. No one deserves that. Park your bitterness and actually contribute to a conversation. Ironically that requires a different kind of sack.

To answer the question posed in the OP, you have to remain true to what you do and not panic. Last year in the first 2 games this team had 1 sack. We are only 1 behind last year's pace. There's no need to assume the worst and this team will go through the season without ever sacking the QB. That is ridiculous.

The problem I have with hand wringing hysteria is twofold. One, reason goes out the window, and two, it is contagious. It spreads faster that venereal disease at a free brothel. It is absolutely ludicrous to think no sacks will happen this soon into the season. Why haven't they so far? Well for one thing Tampa has a pretty darned good OL. Last year they kept our pass rush in check too.

The Giants have a great OL. One of the best in the NFL. Last year Eli was
sacked only 27 times and we got 12 of those. So why did we fail this time? Isn't it quite simple to assume the Giants coaches looked at film and figured out what they were doing wrong? Isn't it quite simple to assume that the players wanted to know how to keep their QB upright against good pressure and then executed?

Does that mean we can't get to Eli? No, the hand wringing hysteria does not win over logic. It does mean logically that we need to adjust next time we play. I will bet anyone who thinks the sky is falling that the next time we play we sack the Giants QB. Maybe not 8 times, but we will get there.

The number one thing this team must do, stay with what you know and believe in yourself. These things tend to happen in bunches. They are psychological. Once you get in the other guy's head, you start to succeed.

Dude, If Wade held something back that would have helped us win a historic game, as well as an important division game, he should be fired on the spot.
