Part of the thought process is that this is a weak QB class. Use a high pick now because they are forcing it means they are out on potential better options in the next draft or two.
Also the fifth year option isn’t cheap (and not an option unless it’s a first rounder), especially on a guy who has barely played if at all. The tag is expensive also. Would be nice to time things a little better and take at least a small advantage of the rookie deal. Next year? I wouldn’t argue, but since it’s their biggest player addition every year, I doubt they use a first anytime soon.
Honestly, you just don’t sign a QB to a four year deal for record money that’s structured to where you can’t get out of it until after three without significant pain, then have the next move be to find his successor immediately.
They can try to get lucky for a third time in a row for cheap, and probably will try that, but the next QB that wins here is probably drafted very high after rock bottom is hit….whenever that is.
