Dallas currently has 6 safeties on board
Hamlin
C. Brown
Watkins
Davis
Battle
Roy Williams
But for all intents and purposes the coaching staff wanted 5 safeties on the roster last year, injuries got in the way.
I think some of this depends on how the cap plays out. Personally, I think Roy should probably be released, but I wouldn't mind trying him out at ILB in training camp (replacing Burnett) and see how it works. If it doesn't, then cut him after June 1st.
You obviously keep Hamlin and Davis.
Brown I see little value in. He knows the system, isn't a problem and can play some nickel and dime. But he's not a terrific special teams player. Battle, eh, don't now yet. I'd probably keep Watkins around. He's decent enough in coverage and is a very good special teams player.
I still think we draft a safety. I don't know where the 'rookie safety can't start' theory came from...happens all of the time in the NFL. Give me Rashad Johnson or Sean Smith and I think we'll be much improved in coverage from our safeties.
But, I'm guessing we keep all of the safeties for now (maybe Roy gets cut) and then decide what we'll do with them once we get into training camp.
