I sure hope Watkins isnt in there.lol.A rookie isnt going to be ready to start. We need to get a guy before they are all gone.I like Sean Jones.

Hopefully Jerry likes him also:) That could open up alot of options come draft time having the SS position filled already.

I think Tre Battle might show us something as a rotational guy. His weight seems to be his only limitation. What an odd magntitude of a limitation it is, though.

Patrick Chung and Sean Smith won't fall to us IMO. I think we'd be lucky to get Rashad Johnson and just tell Hamlin to suck it up and play SS. I can see us taking William Moore.

I don't see the Cowboys blocking Mike Jenkins with Springs. I think the interest in Springs is for a safety position. At least, I wouldn't block Mike Jenkins. That's just stupid.

I agree and Springs would make a good SS.I never thought of it this way.

Spring might start for us as a CB. He was quite good last year.

Jenkins is nowhere near as reliable, and the modern NFL allows 3rd/4th stringers to develop just fine cuz they're on the field so much even at that designation.

Springs wouldn't be blocking Jenkins..hey maybe Jenkins will get a fire lit under his bootay and compete for a job.

Everyone is in a hurry to commit another 37mil to a safety, since it worked out so well with Hamlin, I suppose that's completely reasonable.

Me? I'd rather draft a guy. We played with JAG's back there all of last year, and there wasn't much difference.

As much fun as it is to have 5 years 40 million tied to every starter on our roster, it may be time to consider developing young guys like we are with the corners finally.

Competition never hurt, but good organizations don't bring in older guys to "compete" with young # 1 picks. They pick them and play them, because they live in "the real world" and not in Dallas' world. You like them, you pick them, and you play them.

The only guy that should be competing with Jenkins is Scandrick.

Dallas currently has 6 safeties on board

Hamlin
C. Brown
Watkins
Davis
Battle
Roy Williams

But for all intents and purposes the coaching staff wanted 5 safeties on the roster last year, injuries got in the way.

I think some of this depends on how the cap plays out. Personally, I think Roy should probably be released, but I wouldn't mind trying him out at ILB in training camp (replacing Burnett) and see how it works. If it doesn't, then cut him after June 1st.

You obviously keep Hamlin and Davis.

Brown I see little value in. He knows the system, isn't a problem and can play some nickel and dime. But he's not a terrific special teams player. Battle, eh, don't now yet. I'd probably keep Watkins around. He's decent enough in coverage and is a very good special teams player.

I still think we draft a safety. I don't know where the 'rookie safety can't start' theory came from...happens all of the time in the NFL. Give me Rashad Johnson or Sean Smith and I think we'll be much improved in coverage from our safeties.

But, I'm guessing we keep all of the safeties for now (maybe Roy gets cut) and then decide what we'll do with them once we get into training camp.

Newman goes down, your down to Ball at nickel. No thanks. I prefer depth and worst case scenario.

You want to follow the Commanders personnel philosophy, feel free. I've stated my opinion.

Unless you are getting a bit better than avg Safety then I wouldn't be down for it re: FA. Drafting is always best. Cheaper. Battle will help. He's a player. Davis will be here. Keep in mind that the Safety position is more cover than run support now. The pure SS may get to be just a few elite guys who can do it both well. Most will be hybrid CBs big enough to still cover and help run support. Those 5-11 and 6-0 guys around 200 are going to be more popular.

And I agree with some that the front seven is more important that the safeties although I'm not saying the position isn't important. A
dominant front seven can play good defense with decent DBs more so than a dominant secondary with a decent front seven.

I agree. You can't have Pro Bowlers with big salaries at every position with a cap. At least not for long.

The draft is absolutely necessary to stay cap thrifty and efficient. And role vets via FA should augment the few elite FAs like Davis.

Why not try and get Shawn Springs and put him at CB along with Newman as the starters. Scandrick and Jenkins are still developing players and will play a lot in nickle/dime situations as the 3 and 4 CB on the depth chart. Ball is our 5, cool.

Then let's get Sean Jones and start him at SS with Hamlin at FS. We have Watkins, Brown & HOPEFULLY re-sign Keith Davis (of course for special teams also) and there is our depth.

I mean for myself, this make TOTAL COMMON SENSE... Get on this Jery Jones, Wade Phillips AND the entire staff!!!

We are in better shape then you think with the cap..don't even worry about that. We've been quiet in FA the last 4 years. We arn't even close to the Commanders and how they approach filling their roster.
