Not looking for whining about the player/pick. What are the pros and cons of Jalen Brooks

34 inch arms at 6'1 makes this guy incredibly difficult to defend against on certain routes. He is also very elusive after the catch. Good gamble that late. Obviously the negatives
are that he has off field issues

Looks like a pretty good player with size, not much speed, but the ability to get open and has good hands. But no idea if it will translate to the NFL. Not our worst pick at all IMO.

Pros: upside for 2023 is practice squad
Cons: upside for 2023 is practice squad

They must have had a deal in place with the UDFA FB to have thrown this dart.

Hands: Jason Witten
Body: Noah Brown

I watched all of the offensive snaps in 2 South Carolina games.

He literally caught the ball every time he was targeted.

Terrific ability to catch the ball even when heavily contested.

He was not heavily targeted. Average ~3 catches per game in 2022.

Receiving Average: 15.3

Rushing Avg (reverses): 12.8

Just finished watching him against Clemson, Georgia, & Kentucky.

Pros
  • Special Teams Ability: Granted, I did not personally watch this, but listening to his interview on the Draft Show, he specifically mentioned his special teams ability as something he brings to the table. That's why he was drafted & his best path to make the team.
  • RAC: He doesn't get a lot of touches, but he got good production multiple runs. He was given a couple of end arounds & he returned one for a 24 yard TD. Showed elusiveness with a few jukes & broken tackles.
  • Catching: Didn't see any drops. Flashed some difficult catch ability. One contested catch against Clemson.
  • Run Blocking: Decent on the whole; definitely a lot better than a lot of receivers these days who run fake routes & don't engage defenders.
Cons
  • Speed: Not used as a deep threat at all. Credited with a 4.69 second 40 yard dash at the combine; a time he improved on at his pro day with a 4.58 time.
  • Route Running: Limited route tree; most frequent route I saw was a drag route. Mediocre quickness on the break. Thought he got disrupted by press coverage.
  • Production: 58 Receptions for 785 Yards & 2 TD's across his career; that' s not good for a single season, let alone across three years. Started every game of his final season, but far removed from an every down player.
I like him for where he was drafted.

Pros:
Chance to beat out one of the 3 amigos Tolbert, Fehoko and Houston and establish himself as WR4.
Cons:
Can't think of any just now.

I think that Brooks is going to make the team after watching his highlights. He is strong and catches the ball well and is a good runner after the catch and as a rusher. He also is a special teams player. A gunner and a corner on punt return. He was just an outstanding 7th round pick and I will be very surprised if he doesn't make the team.

His highlights are very good. He is a strong 195 to 200 pounds and he plays special teams. He has an excellent chance of making the roster.

I saw a pre-draft interview with one of their late round picks. I think it was the CB but might have been Jalen Brooks.

The player kept repeating "I love to play special teams". Even when they would ask him about his primary position, he would bring the converstation back to special teams and the "I'll do whatever coach tels me to do".

Somebody had definitely "coached" him up on what to say as a player just hoping to get drafted...
