What current cap numbers may say about our draft

As it stands today before any contract restructures, the Dallas Cowboys go into the 2018 season with the 2nd highest amount of cap space in the NFL dedicated to the WR position. Specifically, the Cowboys spend $28.2 million, which is approximately 17% of their total cap space on their WR corps. When you add TE spending, cots on those two positions rises to 24% of cap space. Crazy!

Seems obvious now that IF the Cowboys are going to draft a WR early in this upcoming draft, some of these current receivers are going to have to have their contracts adjusted. We all know Dez is slotted to make a whopping $16.5 mil in 2018.

So....it’s clear that Dez and maybe others MUST make some contract adjustments if the Cowboys plan on drafting a WR in the 1st or 2nd round.

OR....if Dez is allowed to play for $16 mil next year, does it indicate the Cowboys do not plan on taking a WR early in the draft or finding a decent one in FA? Obviously, the next few weeks will tell us a lot.

Interesting situation. Your thoughts?

Yes. I would hope the Cowboys do get a restructure in place on DEZ.
But looking at the misses - which shows only about 10 were his fault.

I would restructure the pay out down to about 10 million. With incentives of 4 million depending on numbers. That would bring it back to 14 million.

This is a pretty deep draft for WRs. I don't think we absolutely need to take a WR in the 1st round. I mean, if that's the best player at our slot, in the 1st round then lets go ahead and take a WR but I don't think we have to do that.

There are 4 or 5 WRs in this draft that could be 1st round guys and I don't think that that many will go in the 1st. There are another 10 guys who could get drafted, maybe more.

I believe that Dez will restructure and that will create more room. I don't know if that's really the best way for us to go, you figure that this is really the last year that Dez is probably unable to be moved, next year his cap hit is much more manageable and a trade could probably be worked. While Dez may not be lighting it up in this Offense, I do believe that if you put him in another Offense and he can start posting big numbers again. JMO on that though.

Who are you interested in at WR in rounds 2-4?

Who are you interested in at WR in rounds 2-4?

Kinda depends on who falls out of the first and also what happens in the combine but:

I think Cain is interesting. He has some substance flags, so I am not sure if he is off our board or not, but the guy has a huge amount of talent and he is what I believe our Offense needs. He is a deep threat with speed to make you respect him Vertically.

I think Deontay Burnett is interesting. He is a bit lite in the britches but he runs good routes, has good quickness and decent hands.

Simmie Cobbs is interesting. Great size for the position. Smooth player, good body control, tracks well and understands how to get open in Zone Coverage. I worry a little bit about his focus, I am not sure if he worked hard enough and he needs to learn how to get a better release but his physical ability is really interesting to me.

Michael Gallup is really interesting to me. He needs to get better coaching, there are things that he still has to work on and they are the types of things that a good WR coach could teach him but he's got some skills. Plays fast, good explosion, works well off the release, good hands, quick feet. Good open field runner. If you get this kid with the right technique, he could really be a heck of a WR.

There are others, too many for me to completely go into right now but there are some guys out there, that might be available to us, in later rounds.

Other than HOF/All Pro type talent, really good WRs can be found deep in drafts. Antonio Brown is a great example, although he is certainly an unusual talent.
