What Dez's deal means for Cowboys entering training camp

It's hard to quantify exactly what it means for the Cowboys to have Dez Bryant signed long-term ahead of Wednesday's deadline --€“ and that's not even including the gigantic payday coming his way.

Firstly, it secures the team with one of the NFL's top wide receivers for what is likely to be the remainder of Tony Romo's career. As Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones has been fond of saying this offseason, there's likely only a three-to-five-year window remaining for the Pro Bowl quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

With Bryant and his 56 career touchdowns on board, Romo can be sure he'll have one of the game's best talents to throw to for the duration of that. It also brings the Cowboys' top dog back into the receiving corps, as a Dez Bryant holdout would have left Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley and Devin Street as the only experienced wide outs on the roster.

You can get as deep into the X's and O's as you want to. On top of being a red zone mismatch and a consistent 1,200-yard receiver, Bryant gives defenses a focal point to open lanes for the Cowboys' running game. With DeMarco Murray departed in free agency, Bryant's presence on the field is bound to make life easier for Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar --€“ or anyone else the Cowboys line up at running back.

More than that, though, this is huge for a franchise with playoff and Super Bowl aspirations in 2015. Had the Cowboys failed to sign Bryant on Wednesday, he likely would have held out for part – if not the entirety -- of the team's training camp in Oxnard, Calif.

Whether Bryant would have sat out of regular season games, missing out on $750,000 per week in the process, is a different matter altogether. But with no monetary incentive to practice during training camp, this is an issue that would have followed the team through the month of August, into the preseason.

With their All-Pro receiver in the fold, and with the recent reduction of Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy's suspension, the Cowboys don't have many remaining off-field questions to deal with.

When training camp begins on July 28, the Cowboys can count on Bryant to "lead the way," as Jones predicted, as both an All-Pro talent and a face of the franchise.

That should do wonders for this team in the coming months -- on the field and off it.

...The Cowboys have opened up a second window of contention in Romo's career with their 12-4 finish last season and their recent personnel acquisitions. Romo, who turned 35 in April, is coming off his best season. He threw 34 touchdown passes with nine interceptions and led the NFL in Total QBR, passer rating and completion percentage.

At the scouting combine in February, owner and general manager Jerry Jones related a story from the famed Cowboys bus at the Super Bowl about a conversation with Romo in regards to what the team needed to do with RB DeMarco Murray.

With Stephen Jones and Garrett within ear shot, Romo told the owner, "Jerry, see Stephen, he's got himself about 25-30 years of this ahead. Jason, coach, maybe something similar to that. Me, I'm three to five. You're three to five. We got to stick together. It's now for us."

The Cowboys didn't move much to keep Murray, who left for the Philadelphia Eagles, despite Romo's plea.

By signing Bryant to this type of deal, the Cowboys showed they needed him more than Murray, and they've shown everybody that the time is now for them to compete for a Super Bowl.

This team has a lot of young players that are going to be key to it's success going forward. It is absolutely crucial that you have the team's hardest worker and tone-setter in camp to lead by example. Dez is this team's Irvin, which means his intangibles are every bit as valuable as his playing skills. Dez has the unique ability to work extremely hard and show others how to enjoy the process. That trait is very rare and more importantly ... it's contagious. The foundations of champions are built with this type of work ethic permeating the organization.

One of the biggest things it means for me is that Byron Jones will get to practice all summer with Dez Bryant lining up across him. Look at how much Tyron Smith benefited from Demarcus Ware... yea... that could be good.

This avoids the circus that would have been camp without Dez.

It also finishes Romo's career, and maybe Jerry's.

My concerns left remaining now. Which isn't a lot or means much.

Watching the RB back situation, and see the development of Randle or McFadden and how they replace Murray.
As I said numerous times, I think they will be fine.

Next, which also not a huge issue. How will the defense perform the first 4 games without Hardy and McClain.
Hardy wasn't here, so he is just a bonus. We will be fine with DLaw, Mincey, Gregory those games.
Lee is back, so they will adapt fine, then when Ro returns, it's another bonus.

I used to think lining up against a great player like Dez would improve a CBs performance, but not so, see Carr and Claiborne.

It means no distractions, and had he not been signed, it would have been a distraction all thru the season.
It also means Dez has time to get in the groove and be in TC. and PS games.
