Something about Gene Upshaw. Now Tag's is saying he might not keep his job as play-by-play man on NFL Network. Anyone know what he said that is so offensive?

He said on his way out, tag's should show the new commish where he keeps gene upshaws leash. Saying the players rep is nothing more than a puppet to the owners and the commish.

From MSNBC.com

Gumbel created a stir during his closing remarks on HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” last week when he suggested that outgoing NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue should show his successor, Roger Goodell, “where he keeps Gene Upshaw’s leash.” Gumbel then referred to Upshaw as a “docile head of the players union” and the commissioner’s “personal pet,” who maintains labor peace at the expense of his members.

Basically he called Upshaw a dog.

The bigger question is why did Bryant Gumble have a job doing play-by-play in the first place?

On HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" last week, Gumbel directed his closing remarks to incoming NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Gumbel urged Goodell to approach Tagliabue before the outgoing commish cleans out his desk and get him to "tell you where he keeps Gene Upshaw's leash. By making the docile head of the players' union his personal pet, your predecessor has kept the peace without giving players the kind of guarantees other pros take for granted. Try to make sure no one competent ever replaces Upshaw on your watch."

As they were saying on NFL radio over and over this weekend that Gumble's painting Upshaw to be an "Uncle Tom"

Several people have said it would be a mistake to replace Gumble as he's simply there to be a lightning rod and more of a soap box guy then an actual announcer. Firing Gumbel would be a big mistake for Tagliabue

Personally I never liked the guy and think its a pretty classless attack

NFLPA's Vincent: Gumbel's criticism 'inappropriate'
Associated Press
PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Troy Vincent would have preferred Bryant Gumbel kept his views to himself rather than using his TV show as a forum to harshly criticize the NFL's relationship with its players' union.
Here's more on the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2557595&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines
Vincent, however, noted that Gumbel's criticisms are not new and have been made previously by others.

That's the most telling comment to me, and it is just what I was thinking. People have been saying this about Upshaw for years. Why the big deal because Gumbel said it?

Does Troy Vincent think it was "black on black" crime?

If you look at how much money the other pro sports make, Gumble is right on. This last agreement was viewed as his biggest stand yet.

I'm not going to complain, though, because I think lack of a salary cap, sky-rocketing salaries and other uncontrolled financial regulation have killed baseball and hockey. Socialism works sometimes, I guess.:

Before we compare NFL salaries to Baseball and Basketball salaries I would think it would be wise to take into per capita revenue in each league.

Does anyone know where you can find that data?
