What do "free agent workouts" entail?

If anyone knows, when we "workout" guys like Ben Tate and Felix Jones, what do we have them do? Do they run a 40 yard dash? Do they get put through position drills? Do they actually run behind a makeshift offensive line and run some of our basic plays?

Also, does anyone know if we had Darren McFadden run a 40 yard dash? I'd be really curious if he came close to his rookie 4.3 or if he's gotten considerably slower at age 27.

Good question. There are a ton of media guys doing next to nothing at this time of year. It would be nice if they could provide some of those details.

I know Jimmy used to make players run the forty.

One report about the RBs that worked out said something about the Cowboys doing something to test their explosiveness, but there were no details beyond that.

I think the workout is what is sounds like, a workout. Most likely the same workout a draftee may go through, 40 times, drills , etc. For veterans it may be requested to see if they are still in football shape or have some movements. You don't see in demand FA or recent FA being work out. Mostly guys who been out of work for a while or someone we want to bring in after the season who been on the couch.

They see who can out drink Jerry.....then see how many...uuuhhmmsss they can say 10 times in a row the fastest....

But yes, good question.

My guess would be that they run position specific drills, the 40, shuttles, and and do some whiteboard stuff regarding play recognition.

The media probably isn't allowed access.

I think they brought out the wheelchairs for these guys. As an injury prone group Red felt they would perform at a more accurate level in a normal environment.

Just guessing here but I would imagine they test their conditioning in general to see if they've been maintaining their physical fitness to a point where they could be conditioned properly without it taking 4 months or so for them to qualify as being suitably fit. I think it would most likely be combine-like exercises to help discover that. Also, it would seem a physical exam would be in order to check them out for the possibility of lingering injuries.

They have to run bleachers at Jerry World....touching every seat in the house, within a given amount of time.

This is probably the true part...as many would actually show up and start questions anew.

And I agree, great question and what makes development of information so good here. Someone just wants to know why...not an agenda for pecking orders.

Easy fella'...they still have the pride of a football player.

Ben Tate was on my friend's boat Saturday here in OCean City, MD. He is a big Philly fan and I asked him if he would wear a Cowboys jersey if Tate was signed. He said it looked like he might have to, whatever that means.
