What do our LBers do?

I was just rewatching some of the plays from the Cardinals game. What are our linebackers actually supposed to be doing in this defense? I know we run a lot of zones but it seems on passing plays half the time at least 1 or 2 of them just drop back, off the line, into space with no one anywhere near them. Sometimes they show blitz and then do the same thing. It's basically like we are playing defense with less men on the field than we should be because we have several players just standing around, not affecting the play at all. Can someone explain this? This can't be how the defense is designed, is it?

in zone they do what you described, drop back read and react... the problem in the AZ game was the CB's were the easy target like Highschool easy for the backup QB. Now im not saying the LB's do good because our LB's are bad really bad.

Murray and to a lesser extent Sanborn move around and take bad angles to avoid contact. Gaps appear and our guys slide away. They certainly don't fill. Murray is the biggest perpetrator of this. It harkens back to the Sun Glasses King. That's a guy that avoided the dirty things LB involve. Murray is a clown. He could be better. Sanborn is just a bad football player. Both of their effort sucks.

Shemar James is just as bad, if not worse at diagnosing plays.

He is just faster and can catch up and make some tackles down the field.

I'd kind of like to think they'd be in a space to actually react to something. Not a space where no one is within 15 yards of them.
It’s still your zone to cover whether a route is ran there or not. I’m not a fan of this D scheme. I don’t think it fits the players we have.

You know who I miss? I will get killed for this but for a year and a half this guy was the best LB to wear a Cowboys uniform for the last couple decades. An absolute beast. His problems were off the field and it ruined what could have been a great career.

I miss Purple Drank.

this isnt directed at you connor but i keep hearing this "Zone doesnt fit our players" and im not sure how that works. As an NFL DB playing zone or man is not some crazy physical change and EVERY NFL defense does both. The only thing that can mean is our DB's are not smart enough to understand how to work a zone and thats pretty hard to believe. Now what is fact is on zone plays where there is no pressure an NFL QB should be able to find the whole and complete a pass. Crazy enough trying to cover man to man for over 5 seconds is also very hard to do.

What do they do? Miss gap assignments, take horrible angles on tackles, and get washed out by blocks. Is that not what they are suppose to do?

Remember those days when we used to complain about LVE? Ah….

What about the days we used to complain about Jacklyn Smith? I sure miss that guy, you don't see a guy nowadays run ten yards down the field and jump on a guy's back to be in on the tackles like him. smh, I was thinking it was him we were getting ready to bring back. dang.

I loved the 4th quarter down 17 tackle 5 yards down field arm swoosh's. That was some clear eye stuff.
