First, a confession. I've never watched him play a full game. I've only seen youtube videos of him.

But ... what I see is a fast guy that sometimes takes bad angles, is not great at changing directions, and who rarely puts a hit on anyone. He seems to tackle alot by dragging the runner down, and I'm concerned that stronger, faster NFL players will run right through that stuff.

So what am I missing about this guy? What gets you excited about seeing him on the field? What do you think he will bring to our defense?

Grass is always greener on the other side.
I don't know why so many here think a rookie with no training camp no mini camps can come in an replace a seasoned vet.

I can't say that I've seen him play much outside of the same clips most of us have seen. However, it seems as though he is a bit of a freak athlete. According to many, he had first round talent but slid because of the injury. Clearly we can't expect too much but we have seen Rob Ryan utilize players in creative ways. I think an explosive guy with unusual athletic ability will be able to do a few things well without too much experience with the defense. Having said that, it would appear that his best chance to contribute will be on special teams (where he should excel). I don't think it's reasonable to expect much of an impact on defense this year.

Well maybe not all Bruce(s) kick ***. :laugh2:

Yes the name Bruce does have to factor in there.

I think after he starts playing and makes a huge play...he could look at players on the opposing team and say...They call me Bruce.

I like that the scouts that drafted Sean Lee liked him enough to draft him injured at the top of the second.

Beyond that and the fact that he seems fast, don't know. His sophomore year was apparently pretty phenomenal.

Read & React: Generally does a nice job in reading his keys. Aggressively attacks the line of scrimmage and underneath routes, often breaking on underneath passes before the quarterback has even released the ball. Is so aggressive that he can be susceptible to good play-action. Only average ability to locate the football, but pursues hard and has fine closing skills due to his explosiveness.

Run defense: Aggressive in meeting, greeting and discarding blocks against the run. Has the lateral agility and vision to elude blockers and makes plays at the line of scrimmage. Also shows some explosiveness in his upper body with his ability to stack and shed blocks. Rare straight-line speed and good agility to avoid tripping up through the trash. Chases hard laterally and downfield in pursuit.

Pass defense: Provides a good initial pop to the tight end and has the agility and speed to trail closely when in man coverage. Gains good depth on his drop. Changes directions fluidly and has rare straight-line speed. Reacts aggressively to the movement of the quarterback, showing good route recognition and a burst to close on the ball. Can be beaten with good play-action due to his over-aggression.

Tackling: Possesses legitimate explosiveness as a hitter. Generates great momentum in only a few steps and can deliver highlight reel collisions. Generally a reliable open-field tackler, but sometimes drops his shoulder for the big hit and fails to wrap up securely, resulting in some missed tackles. Also has a tendency to arrive on the scene so fast that he's a bit out of control, overrunning the play slightly. Generally athletic and strong enough to make the lunging tackle anyway.

Pass Rush/Blitz: Generates good speed off the edge as a stand-up blitzer. Typically relies on his speed to run around the offensive lineman, showing good flexibility and agility in doing so. Gives blockers an explosive pop to disengage from blocks, but has yet to develop a variety of pass rush moves or the hand technique to fight through once they've latched on to him.

Intangibles: Underwent ACL reconstruction surgery on his left knee on Dec. 14, 2010 and may not be available to work out for scouts before the draft. Prior to the injury he was recognized as a workout warrior. Reportedly has been timed at 4.39 in the 40-yard dash, and owning a 40.5-inch vertical jump and a 440-pound max bench press, 605-pound squat and a power-clean of 374 pounds. Special teams demon for North Carolina in 2008. Led the country with five blocked kicks, including four punts. Blocked eight kicks for his career

Youtube scouts weren't impressed with Sean Lee's highlight videos as well. He turned out okay.

I live in ACC country. NC State fan. Seen plenty of Carter. He's not going to be Brady James but he can hit.

We've been big and bulky at LB since parcel. Lee and Carter are more fluid in space and athletic/coverage guys. He's great a shedding blocks at the point of attack and getting his hands on the ball carrier. Ive seen him take down Taylor (QB-Va Tech) in space several times and Taylor is as fast/elusive as anybody you'll see. I've also seen him take down Pat White in space which is very very hard to do.

Carter Reminds me of Bart Scott with a little more athleticism. As long as his knee heals I feel he's going to be a perfect fit with lee and our team. He's very similar to lee in many ways when it comes to their ability to attack a ball carrier in space and shed blockers. Neither can take on guards constantly in gaps, nor will they be asked to, but they have the technique to shed them and speed to attack downhill and make blockers whiff.

Again not your Brady James thumper type but he can hit. Think more Bart Scott or Jonathan vilma, even Ken Norton and Darrin Smith. He's very very versatile and can play Sam, Mike, Will, Nickel, dime. He was a safety, and QB in highschool.

The bottom Line to me is that he fits our new mold not only LB's but players in general. Guys who can do multiple things and line up all over the place. We all know how rob likes to move people around and Carter gives him that. He is also known as a Sean lee type leader with a strong work ethic.

obviously speed. But as I have said, I believe he cam to college as an offensive player and made the transition to defense. LBer is such an instinctive position, so the jury is out.

He was a safety in college as well as QB/running back.

so was he an offensive player in high school? did he come to college as an offensive player? when did he transition to linebacker?

Decathlete actually. Had his picture on the front of a Wheaties box for awhile.

Runs great. Great coverage Linebacker. I imagine if he's nearly as good as advertised, he'll be doing a lot of the deep coverage and Lee will do mostly intermediate to short route coverage. Not sure about his ability to shed blockers, but he's big enough and explosive enough to do so. Really great stopping the run out on the perimeter. Team leader. Superb special teams player as well.

If he's nearly as good as advertised and both he and Lee stay healthy, it makes things a lot tougher for opposing offenses when you have two heady, athletic ILB's who can stop the run and really do well against the pass. I've felt for awhile now that our ILB play has prevented our defense from being truly dominant. I think Garrett sees that as well. I like Bradie James, but he's limited in what he can do...which is take on blockers and stuff the run up the middle and be solid in short zone coverage.

I love Sean Lee, but having him play deeper zone coverage isn't really using him to his best of his ability. Not much that we can do now.

But, I think if Carter can stay healthy, he'll be a good one.
