What do we do with this defense?

It’s very obvious that our defense is not very good. Denver, LA and GB have rolled up big numbers on us. Things are not going to change this year. What do we to do to improve it going forward? Can Marinelli and his failed system, etc.? Thoughts?

Irving now back, Hitchens now back. Rooks getting experience. Lee missed 2 games. It's easy to see this defense getting better as the season goes along. We knew this preseason. Not sure why everyone is up in arms with the slow start.

Or maybe have the patients it takes to rebuild a secondary. Who really thought changing out your entire secondary with young players was gone be a smooth transition

Slow start since 2013 probably has something to do with it.

2013 they were gashed. 2014 our best defense was TOP.
2015 was a wasted year due to Romo being out.
2016 our best defense was TOP

Sure, they could get better, but I'm not too optimistic that it'll be good enough, unless Dak becomes Romo of 2014.

I had high hopes for D-Law but he has disappeared. Irving came out with a vengeance early in the game then he kinda quieted down too. There's no consistency from the D-Line, the linebackers have looked putrid (including Lee at times) and the secondary is too green at this point. I never thought we would really miss the likes of Carr, Church and Wilcox. I was wrong. This is more than growing pains. We suck on defense.

Our corners are in position to make plays, unfortunately they never know where the ball is.
Been like this for 20 years.

Get rid of it, we should have gotten rid of the entire system after Kiffin retired. This team needs an infusion of energy and I doubt their 70 year old DC yelling around is getting that done.

He had a sack, but the penalty on Mayowa wiped out the loss of downs and yardage.

Teams know about D-Law now. It's the lack of production elsewhere that is hurting the D-line.
Maybe with Irving back, we can get more pressure, but it's TBD how consistent he'll be this year

Agree but I have accepted the fact that our coaching staff, esp Rod, are not up to the task of fielding a true, serious contender

The D line got sacks but with one exception no real pressure when it REALLY mattered. And the way the pack ran the ball on them... The LBS all looked sad; the secondary no better.

Really there is nothing to point to right now on the D that really gives me hope.

Sure we got 4 sacks and the refs cheated on a possible big one late, but other that THAT play how often was Rodgers REALLY bothered?

The scheme is NOT working. A really good DC is flexible enough to change the scheme to FIT his players. Rod is clearly NOT that good.

We are soft up the middle without a big NT type McClain guy. Collins is playing like a 250 pound man who is handled by double teams easily. We need a McClain clone and another DE to rotate. Jaylon must be protected by the DTs like middle linebackers of the 60s and 70s who were not big physical men. Plus Jaylon is not playing like pre-injury Jaylon to start with. We need to invest a high pick here unless they are sure he will get healthy and return to form.

Lee must be a player/coach I assume because they cannot function well without him. He is just one guy, who is 30y/o and injury prone. Is the D that undisciplined and or intellectually deficient?

The secondary is young but I think has much potential to be a strength down the road. At some point they must start to get TOs.

There you have it. We need at minimum two DL and an athelete at LB, and the secondary to mature overnight. Easy peezy lemon sqeezey.
