Are you a member of the RISK and Insurance Management Society?
No, I'm actually not in that society. This job is more of a rotational assignment that they gave me about 10 months ago, so I'm kinda new to it. My background is Chemical Engineering, and I got an MBA about 5 years ago on top of that.
The concept of the job is basically oil refinery optimization where I evaluate the cost of different types of crude oil (our feedstock), and the value of our products that we make from crude oil at the refinery. I then try to find a happy medium that maximizes value using a linear programming computer model of the entire refinery.
As of late, we're losing money because gasoline at wholesale prices is actually trading below the cost of crude oil. We're doing a little better financially than other refineries because we're diesel heavy (i.e. we make more diesel that most other plants).
These are strange and interesting times in my world...but it is a lot of fun.
