What do you think of potentially Todd Bowles as our DC?

I suppose the positives include that he has a good relationship with Garrett and obviously JJ.

Also, T Bowles should be familiar with quite a few of our defensive players, so he should be able to hit the ground running.

Given Bowles' familiarity with many of our defensive players, he would probably have a view in terms of some of the team's FAs. Which ones he prefers to keep, for example.

I also read that he came in behind Schwartz for the Lions HC job which is an indiation that other teams value him as well.

I would suggest that depends on the player turnover. Any DC that has to play with those two Safeties and a lack of a pass rush outside of D-Ware is going to have to play bend-but-don't break to prevent constant torching.

here is a radical idea, lets interview candidates and then hire the best man for the job and not bring in someone who "has a good relationship with JG and JJ" or "is familiar with our defensive personnel"

this defense needs a complete overhaul, fire all the defensive coaches, bring in a real DC who has no relationship with the current players and whose only interest is to build a great defense.

Bowles probably wasn't ready back then, so they brought in Mike Nolan to help him learn.

After a few seasons, he's probably ready now.

Parcells liked him a lot, so that's good enough for me. If you want further examples of coaches Parcells liked, tune into any NFL Playoff game in the next few weeks ... pretty good chance you'll see someone from his coaching tree with the headset on. People can say what they want about Parcells, but to say he didn't have an eye for coaching talent should get you laughed out of the room.

As for hiring Nolan, that was a no brainer. If you got a Top 5 NFL defensive coordinator who runs the same defense you do, why wouldn't you hire him? Bowles was the runner up for the Detroit Lions head coaching job that went to Schwartz, and also has had interviews for head coaching positions with the Broncos and Rams. This isn't just a JJ or JG familiarity thing, the guy is very well thought of as an up and coming coach around the league.

With JJ interviewing Bowles, I would guess there is a reasonable chance he's the guy at DC in any case.

He turned Ken Hamlin into a Pro Bowl player and he certainly got the more out of Terrence Newman than Wade's staff did, so there's something to be said for that. Cowboys were 3rd in the NFC in interceptions in the 3 years he was here, and when he coached secondary in Cleveland they led the league in interceptions.
