What do you think this offense should do to be less predictable?

I for one think it should make more use of playaction. I also think it could stand to improve its screens.

Then there's what I'm not sure about. Does the team have someone who figures out the offense's tendencies as if he were an opposing coach? Knowing your own team's tendencies, and therefore what an opponent might do to exploit them, is very important.

I think they will be even more predictable this year as they return to the Murray ground and pound offense.

But like you, I'd like to see the screen game used more. Also, incorporate more of those rub routes that NE used to perfection against us. A lot of teams use them but we seem to ignore them.

I'd like to see more slants. There was a stat that in 2014 Dez ran the most go routes in the NFL or something like that. I want more stuff for him across the middle so he can run after the catch

Excellent thread topic.

For one....we should play with more pace. With an OL this young and this athletic...we should play much faster than we play. The OL we have is our advantage.

We should vary the snap count. But again..waiting to snap the ball at the very last second is our way of saying we will let the defense dictate to us...as opposed to the other way around

The ball should come out quicker. We have playmakers...get the ball in their hands and let them make plays

We should not run our "bell cow" into the ground. You have several good RBs. Manage the position to take advantage of all 3 and manage the position to play late into January.

Stop using Dez as a decoy to get Witten and Beasley open. If Witten and Beasley cannot get open on their own...then design plays to get them open OR....OR....get somebody else. Dez is explosive...and he needs to touch the ball 8 times a game.

Run the ball. If Dallas can get to the point we can run the ball at will it will open up spaces down the field to attack. I don't see any team that is unpredictable they all run their system and you know what is coming. NE does nothing fancy, a lot of 3 step drops and using Gronk. They do not complicate their offense causing mistakes but they execute it time after time. Save the tricks for the magic shows I will take a well executing offense who is not shooting themselves in the foot with unforced mistakes.

Not running on first down 99% of the time.
Not running up the gut on every third-and-short!!!
Not targeting Beasley on every Third down passing situation.
Moving Dez around.
Occasional two back-sets.
More no huddle ealry in games (Romo is so good here)
Run some pick plays if everyone else is going to do it.

I don't think the offense needs to do anything especially, since they're pretty effective under Romo already. The one thing I've wanted to see was more speed on the outside to put pressure on the back end of a defense that want's to try to double Dez. With guys like Witten and Beasley and now Elliott who can really hurt you in space, it would give Tony some real options for more big plays. So maybe more action for Butler or Lucky or even Egan if he shows anything at all in camp.

I'd also like to see us getting back to going for it on 4th and short more often on the opponents side of the field. That kind of confidence is good for team building.

You pretty much nailed it.

I would like to see more of the following things:

-Play action
-crossing routes
-WR screens
-RB screens
-Move Dez around in the slot more and put him in motion

They know what we are doing based on formations and a little film study. What can we do? Do the opposite? Trickery?

It seems a lot of our success occurrs when the play breaks down and we improvise, the rest of the time we just bulldoze them with the run game and then bam! We burn them with a pass...

Have a healthy qb that can throw more than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage.

Simple...be less predictable. There's no special steps to take. You just stop doing the exact same things in the same situations every time. Throw out of the jumbo formation sometimes. Don't go into Jumbo every time when you need one yard. Just simply mix things up a bit, and make defenses consider both the run and pass in almost every situation (basically anytime it is not 3rd and long).

The offense is predicated around taking what the defense gives you. There might be more than one way was can take advantage of what the defense is offering, but there are limits.

I don't see why it matters, though, as long as you're taking what's there. If they're offering single coverage on Dez on 4th and 2 in a playoff game and we're willing to take it, then why is that an issue? It's only a problem if you can't execute, but that's a problem in any offense.

As long as we're at the top of the league in terms of points/offensive series, the rest doesn't matter. It's on defense where we're not living in that neighborhood or where we can't get the takeaways that we get into trouble.

* Dez Bryant needs to get moved around and put in positions to take advantage of his strengths. More slants more motion etc.

* stop running on 1st down every single time.

* more screens... why don't we use them more?

* use the running backs as passing threats.

Try running a 2 tight end set, or a dual RB set to confuse the defense.

Any of you guys watch other games every week and think "WOW" when watching how innovative other offenses are? I find myself thinking that on a weekly basis. I am of the belief that you'll mainly see bad teams using trick plays on a constant basis. But there's nothing wrong with taking advantage of a teams weaknesses, or strengths, when you see an opportunity to do so. a flee flicker here or there, misdirection plays, how bout designing a running play or 2 for Romo at the goal line, etc. As Jimmy would say, vanilla is for preseason. the problem is that this offense is vanilla year round. Shake some things up already.....

One thing to note that if you increase the pace consistently, you take away a great strength of Romo, which is to catch the defense in favorable matchups for us. So yes, while the clock running down can be annoying, Romo is making calls and changes right up until the last second knowing the defense can't adjust in time.

So sure, it might be nice to go up tempo sometimes, I don't really have an issue anymore with the play clock running down. It plays into a strength of Romo's.

Further, any "we have to run the ball to keep the defense on the sideline and save the defense" fans shouldn't even consider uttering we should play more uptempo.

I know someone wants to say put Dax in and run the spread option. It is vogue.

Utilize Hanna and Escobar more and reduce Witten's role for one. We signed Escobar in the 2nd round and extended Hanna yet we hardly use either.

Put Dez in different spots on the field. More motion. Quit basing the offense on just having every player winning their individual battles to succeed. Try and put them in the best position to win. Seems our best offense is when the original play breaks down and we adlib. Our offense is way too bland and vanilla. We rely on way too many routes that take too much time to develop down the field. And we don't even have any speed really to be doing that as often.
