What championship teams have you seen rebuild ? Rams ? 49ers ?
Look at the two teams you mentioned:
• The Rams did the ultimate 'Roster Reset'. They won Super Bowl LVI, fell off a cliff to 5–12 the next year, stripped the roster of high veteran contracts, and carried insane dead cap. But because they hit on late-round draft picks (like Puka Nacua), they bounced right back into the playoffs immediately. They proved you can purge the books and stay competitive if your coaching and talent evaluation are elite.
• The 49ers did the blueprint 'Foundational Rebuild'. When Lynch and Shanahan took over a 2–14 dumpster fire, they didn't chase flashy free agents. They built through the trenches and absolutely stole elite, culture-setting talent in the mid-to-late rounds—George Kittle (5th), Fred Warner (3rd), Dre Greenlaw (5th). Even when they had a structural down year, that foundation kept them a plug-and-play powerhouse.
Other great examples to look at:
• The 2020s Seattle Seahawks: Everyone thought they were doomed when they traded Russell Wilson. Instead, they used that draft capital to secure foundational young anchors (Cross, Witherspoon) and completely overhauled their cap space and defensive identity. They completed a high-speed rebuild without ever completely bottoming out.
• The 2010s Kansas City Chiefs: They were stuck in that classic 'good but not great' 9-7 or 10-6 purgatory. They recognized their ceiling, aggressively traded up for Patrick Mahomes while he sat behind Alex Smith, and completely rebuilt their offensive infrastructure around him.
The Takeaway for Us (Cowboys):
The problem in Dallas isn't that a rebuild is impossible; it's that our front office seems terrified of a soft reset. With Dak and CeeDee locked into massive deals, we can't do a full tear-down. But we could do a Rams-style reset if we stopped hoarding cap space for no reason and actually focused on drafting heavy structural talent at defensive tackle, running back, and wide receiver depth.
A rebuild works if you have a clear blueprint. Right now, it feels like we’re just stuck in the middle, praying the existing roster magically fixes itself.
