What does Julius bring to the table that Thompson doesn't?

I posted the below email to Dennis and Jen over at ESPN Radio 103. What do you guys say that J.J. brings that Thompson can't?

The difference between this year and last year regarding Julius Jones being out is that we have good running backs that can step in. Thompson impressed last week and to me looks like he runs with a little more purpose than Julius. Thompson has good speed and power and doesn't go down as easy as Julius does.

In short, I'm not too concerend with J.J. not playing for the short term with the backs that we have waiting in the wings. The main question is what does J.J. bring that Thompson doesn't?

***My Bill Parcells moment would have me running by committee with Thompson being the head of the committee.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Well,
For one, blitz pick up.

Jones is good and Thompson is bad.

I think JJ also is secure with the ball and is more patient with his running. JJ is also more elusive.

Other than that, not a heck of a lot.

Julius brings more quickness. He has the ability to create something even if it is just one yard when there is no hole. He is a better blocker. I think he has more moves in the hole and in the open field.

I'll bet Thompson will be more prone to running for a loss then Jones, he has speed, but does he have the vision, experience and power to fight for a tough one or two yards when the holes arent there, will he try to bounce outside too often and get dropped for a 3 yard loss?

Hows his pass catching ? Id like to see him on a screen pass.

Will Bledsoe get killed or hit and fumble cause he misses his blocking assignment ?

Did you see that one article where Parcells told him they were going to bring the safety, be ready for it....Thompson said he saw the safety but then "didnt think he was going to come" so he left his assignment ?

Will he hold onto the ball ?

These are my questions, the giants will try to take advantage of his inexperience.

Right, Ken. Blitz pick-up and ball security. Just those two little things.

Actually, Thompson seems to go down a lot easier than JJ, especailly for a guy that is 6'1", 220 (compared to 5'10", 210 lb. Julius). Also, Julius seems a little more instinctive and elusive as a runner than Thompson. But, teust me on this, this is not a knock on Thomspson. I still feel that JJ is one of the best young RB's in the game (no matter what hs stats say right now). But, Thompson ain't that far behind, which leaves the 'Boys with a pretty nice problem to have.

I have no doubt that Bill will continue to work with Thompson on blitz pickups.

JJ can juke his defender, althought I have not witnessed alot of it this year.........Thompson is just all speed and power.......I like him alot.

IMO people are getting way ahead of themselves on Tyson Thompson... He has nice speed and hits the hole hard, but he doesn't have much in the way of elusiveness or moves. If he were any more than a change-up back, I don't know if the results would be very pretty.

TT has lousy vision. Look how many times he runs towards the would be tackler intead of running away from them during the kickoffs.

JJ runs better in smaller space, blocks better, quicker and more elusive.

TT is more of the HR threat because of his speed.

Different running style. It's funny that you say that because when running between the tackles, you want a runner that has speed and power as opposed to the ability to juke defenders.

It was not long ago that many were saying that we needed to run outside with J.J. more so that he could use his speed to turn it up field. However, it is Thompson's speed to get outside and his power to keep the momentum going foward. I've seen on many occasions seeing J.J. going down very easy.

I don't know guys. I think the dark horse is going to be Thompson and it may play out that Thompson and J.J. become the Cowboys version of the Jets ex-tandem of Jordan and Curtis Martin.

JJ can pick up the blitz and give you 2 yards when you need 1. I feel he protects the ball better than Thompson.

I think Thompson is a very similar runner to Jones. But I believe that Jones is the better back. Half of this is sentamentality for Jones who was incredible last year, part of it is that Tyson's a rookie and hasn't quite had enough time to impress me, though he has done well against the Raiders and Eagles, and part of it is that in a game where Julius had 16 carries and Tyson had 20, Tyson only had 3 more yards.

Lets see TT put together a50 and 200 yard type games for an extended period.

I read the same sillines about Reshard Lee last year. Lets see this play out over time.
:starspin
JJ is our star RB.

I'm not debating who is the better back overall. However, I don't have the same sense of urgency that I had last year when J.J. initially went out. I really feel with the personnel we have, the loss of J.J. will not be as hard on the team as it was yesterday. At least not in the short run.

Long term is another thing though.

Julius has better vision, moves and ability to break tackles better than Tyson Thompson.

Thompson thiough has has way better speed and has the ability to blow by defensive backs when he gets in the open.

Julius right now is a more polished blocker than Thompson is.

Why is this even being asked? Its not like TT did that good when he was against the eagles. He has ball security problems, crappy vision and he avg. less than 4 ypc when JJ was running 4.5 ypc. If it wasn't for JJ being injured, everyone would be saying JJ was back on track with that 150 yd performance against a tough eagle defense.

JJ is more elusive in the open field

JJ can make defenders miss(TT cant make a punter miss)

JJ is a better blocker

JJ knows the system better

JJ is more patient

JJ has better ball secruity

JJ has better quickness

JJ knows where to run

Do i need to keep going. He is a rookie, with alot of speed, he has nothing else but speed, last year we saw more than quickness out of JJ, and this year we will see it again. TT is nothing more than a fast kickoff guy, who can play RB. End of story
