Does it really affect New York?

The Giants had a total of 53 sacks.

13 from Osi
10 from tuck
9 from strahan

Osi got 6 of his sacks in 1 game against philly. 9 of their total sacks came in that one game against philly. And 1 more came in the next game against philly. Combined almost 1/5th of their sacks came against philadelphia alone.

how much does losing strahan (who had a somewhat mediocre year to his own standards) mean to the new york giants.

And how does our improved secondary impact our linebacker corps and its ability to bring a more consistent rush to add to what was already one of the best pass rushes in the nfl? We ranked 3rd in sacks, coming one behind New England, whose pass rush is likely worse than last year, given their losses in their secondary, and their deteriorating linebacker corps.

Here is a recent ESPN article talking about the impact Strahan leaving might have on the team's passrush. It says that teams who sack the QB a lot suffer the most from losing a 9+ sack guy.

Link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3452117

Here is what they say:

"Not every great pass-rusher comes from a great pass-rushing team, of course. Some fans may think the Giants defense can easily make up for Strahan's departure because Justin Tuck is ready to start, Osi Umenyiora is still at his peak and Mathias Kiwanuka is once again healthy. However, recent history shows that top pass-rushing defenses like the Giants take the biggest hit when they lose their stars. "

Yeah, I won't believe it until the season starts without him. He may just be resting his old body the whole offseason and trying to get leverage for more money...one last paycheck.

But he is a funny guy and he can probably become a sideline reporter or TV commentator / analyst with his personality. We will see what he decides in a couple of months.

Their passrush takes a giant step backwards if he doesn't play. He is still their best defensive player.

STRAHAN CHOOSES FOX

Posted by Mike Florio on June 23, 2008, 5:03 p.m. EDT

Former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will spend Sundays in the fall not chasing quarterbacks on the field, but by yukking it up with the likes of Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, and Jimmy Johnson on FOX.

Richard Deitsch of SI.com has the scoop, but we’ve got to tip a hat to SportsByBrooks for pointing it out to us.

It previously was reported by Michael Hiestand of USA Today that Strahan is looking to get into areas other than sports, and that his dream is to host a late-night talk show. FOX hasn’t had one of those since Chevy Chase’s short-lived venture in 1993.

CBS was also believed to be pursuing Strahan.

A press conference is expected on Tuesday to announce Strahan’s hiring.

It’s unknown whether his deal allows him to walk away without consequence if the Giants decide to pay him $8 million or more for the 2008 season, and if Strahan decides to return to action.

Another intriguing dynamic is that the FOX gig will put Strahan in the same building with his buddy Jay Glazer. The two of them teamed up to write a book last year, and remain very close.

And if Strahan gets that late-night talk show he covets, playing the part of Ed McMahon could be Rich “Big Daddy” Salgado, a insurance agent to high-profile atheltes and close friend of Strahan’s. Big Daddy has been showing up regluarly of late on FOX News, and it would seem to be a no-brainer to make
Big Daddy Strahan’s “you are correct, sir” guy.

He is going to be hatin on the Cowboys with Bradshaw like a mothertrucker!

Well, I hope he stays retired. I think this could be real. He is loving going out on top. But.....he may change his mind when the season gets close. He better stay in shape just in case, huh.
