What does Randy Gregory bring to the Cowboys defense?

There’s no denying that Gregory has all the tools to be a dynamic pass rusher in the NFL. He has the speed, the length, the bend, and the hustle. In order for the former Nebraska standout to make his mark for the Cowboys, he’ll need to get into shape and stay healthy. When in shape, Gregory showed signs of being a very good rusher in the little bit of action we saw of him in 2016. Gregory, after missing the first 14 games of the season of the 2016 season, showed up and played well in weeks 16 and 17.

Several videos of Gregory playing:

Another distraction and not much else. Fodder for the homers to tell us that he is the next great DE in Cowboys history.

Here's to the kid getting it going on the field and off

He will show flashes early, but likely show rust also. By year end will show up consistenly on film. Randyg, dlaw, d.irving, malik....things looking up

Obviously you did not read the whole article.

"Should you expect Randy Gregory to come in and completely take over the league? No, but don’t sleep on Gregory either. Yes, he has been a disappointment so far for the Cowboys, but it certainly seems like he has done a lot of soul searching over the last year or two and is a completely different man now. The Cowboys need Randy Gregory and Randy Gregory may need the Cowboys, the two are a perfect fit for each other. It wouldn’t surprise one bit if by mid season Mr. Gregory has earned himself a large role in the Cowboys pass rush."

I'm setting the bar low. I think it will take him at least mid-season to get his legs and feet up under him, especially since he hasn't played in nearly 2 years.
I'm willing to wait. I think he can be special eventually. I'm hoping his pot-smoking days are behind him.

It's great his pot smoking is behind him, but has anyone stopped to consider that perhaps it was the weed that made him such a great player? What if it's like spinach is to Popeye?
Awww.
I just think you are all mixed up.

If weed made someone a great football player I would have skipped college and gone straight to the NFL out of High School.

To the OP, I don't think anyone expects Gregory to do more than be a rotational DE on passing downs. But he has elite physical skills, he has the potential to be a guy that gets 20 - 25 snaps per game and still gets 8 sacks.

exactly, and he wasnt very good in his 1st season, and he game back ANd pLayed a game or 2, was real bad, and now
has been not playing so long, it will take all season to get in a groove again.

Alot depends on if he has stayed in top condition or not these past 2 years.
I know jones boys will want him in the games before he is ready, so could hurt more than help if that happens.

I will add that he is just a name, a guy who was good in college, but has yet
to prove anything in the pro's, same thing for jaylon.

The way I see it , he is now a project player, maybe it turns out good, maybe not, so not expecting anything from him
this year.

Randy was somewhat lacking in the strength department as a rookie. He's been working hard on his weight training while suspended, so there should be at least some improvement to be had upon his return. He'll still be obliged to develop his pro game this year, although the potential for doing so is there. He'll likely be a work in progress this year, while next year should see him returning to the form that made him a college phenom if all goes well.

If you wear the full rosy “fan glasses”, he’s headed to a double digit sack year in full “beast mode”.
If you take the fan glasses off, none of us know. He’s been away suspended for a very long time. Expecting RG to show up to training camp ready to dominate is very unlikely. He may develop into that over time, but there’s no way to know that yet.

I wish Randy Gregory great success but I’ll believe he’s worth what he was drafted to be when I see it consistently over an entire season. We will see.

Gregory brings an element of surprise. You never quite know when his next suspension is coming.

Holy crap. Considering all of those highlights are from only 2 games, and considering he hadn't played for 14 weeks beforehand, he looks pretty damn impressive there.

I try not to get too excited about players with history such as Gregory's, but he's making it hard not to be.

What's the worst thing that can happen?
He doesn't play? We've been through that, everything beyond that is a bonus IMO.
