What Does The Future Hold For J.J. Wilcox?

There aren’t a lot of positives to take away from the Dallas Cowboys’ defense, particularly in the secondary. And rookie safety J.J. Wilcox had a very shaky year. And if you have already started digging into the 2014 draft, you will see many draftniks putting a safety in their first round of their mock drafts to Dallas. And while I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to that, I want to make a case as to why we shouldn’t count out Wilcox just yet.

Put J.J. Wilcox’s year in perspective. Wilcox basically had no offseason after playing in the Senior Bowl, then preparing for the NFL Combine and private workouts, to jumping right into training camp. On top of that, he was a third round pick coming from a small school (Georgia Southern) and he was also playing a position that he had only played for a few years in his life. But the transition actually got harder for him.

Then just as Wilcox was in the middle of training camp, fighting for a starting role on the team, his mother died on August 14th. The 22 year old from Georgia took a week off from camp and rejoined the team in midst of a battle with Will Allen and Jeff Heath. And somehow, things still managed to get worse for Wilcox. Right before a big game against Detroit in which he was preparing to help cover Calvin Johnson, Wilcox injured his knee in practice after he had finally started to get up to speed. Wilcox proceeded to miss three games during his rookie season and was replaced in the lineup by Jeff Heath who never gave up the starting job. And on top of all that, he is playing for the most scrutinized franchise on the face of the Earth. That’s a lot for any player to go through, let alone a 22 year old rookie from Georgia Southern. But in the limited snaps that I saw Wilcox, I came away impressed.

I think he goes in TC penciled as the starter and they go from there. Most "experts" liked the picked but knew coming from a small school it would take some time. I think the JJ/JG need to do that and that's why I don't safety will be picked in the 1st two rounds.

It's for sure nobody knows what the future holds for JJ Wilcox but it's likely the added experience should be invaluable in aiding him to prove himself worthy. If he's able to add consistently good coverage to his list of qualities, he should be able to claim a starting position soon enough. If not, the search continues.

I'm not sure I am done with Heath either. I think he might be a SS and they were playing him out of position. At times, he was the deep fielder 30-35+ yards down the field. That's not his game.

Wilcox still has a high ceiling. I think he would have had a more successful year if he could have watched a vet play there for a while. Unfortunately, Allen was pretty terrible.

Well when you're done with Heath, could you put him in his proper receptacle? We don't want to run the risk of recycling him.

I figured Wilcox would struggle. But that poor kid really just seemed to be up against something all year. At least he has a year behind him now and that limited exposure will help his transition into pro ball. Hopefully he will be healthy and if so I expect him to start.

If Dix or Pryor are there we have to take them. Both are gonna be real good

We've got potential in both Wilcox and Johnson. I'm not comfortable counting on either as starters, though. FS is a definite weakness for us on defense, again.

i think you have to give them another year to develope. we have way to many needs on the dline to be looking safety early in this draft. we are losing hatch who was our best pass rusher. the odds of any rookie coming in and matching what he did is very slim, so you also need to upgrade the other dt spot although that may be crawford who is already on the roster. bottom line, untill you fix the dline you are never gonna know what you have in the dbacks because no dback can cover when you have no rush

Nobody knows. But at least he has a chance, unlike that stiff from Eastern Washington.

I'm not down on him at all. Let's see what he does next year. I'm just looking for improvement, not a finished product.

I take it you are not a huge Matty J supporter. LOL

I like Wilcox and his aggressive attitude. I think he'll get better. How much better is the question.

If Pryor or Dix are there when we are up, we should pull the trigger I think.

Heath should be baggin' groceries somewhere. He is just awful and should not be considered to be in the mix at all.

Really hope they don't give up on him. Kid has ability, just wasn't playing instinctual a year ago. Bet that changes after a full offseason and more experience.

Between the play calling and injuries I think we should draft a stud up front and see what we've got, hard to rate anybody based on the cluster that was this season.
