What does the team actually think about Sam Young?

Not the entire story at all. If you think releasing Columbo this year is going to be an easy move for Garrett it's not. There is some loyalty and respect there with Garrett that will make it a hard move.

It's easy to say Columbo was better then Young because one played and one did not but it's not that simple.

I don't think they will release Colombo at all. I expect him to either be the starter or a backup at RT. And if Young was better than Colombo at the end of the year he would have played. I can see Garrett being loyal to Colombo esp if he was injured. But he wouldn't have started an injured Colombo over Young if Young was better uninjured.

We got a starting LT, so that certainly helps out overall results.

What really bothers me is the way we seem to consistently rate oline later than they go, so it just so happens we are never in position to get any of the good ones.

If you've got a guy rated in the third and he goes in the second then you can just shrug your shoulders and say, "We would have TOTALLY drafted him if he were there in the 3rd!".

Meanwhile that guy is starting elsewhere and doing just fine, and we end up with Brewster and Marten.

DEAD ON. Every year we see the same thing; O linemen we have listed at one rd going one and sometimes TWO rounds earlier. That has to be bad scouting. When you realize that we have drafted and developed a grand total of two good starting O Linemen in the last 10 years that tells one that there is a fundamental weakness somewhere.

I like sam young alot and think he has potential. Hopefully we give him a shot in camp and the preseason to see what he has.

Miles Austin- he got his shot because Roy got hurt. Otherwise he would have still been a bit player.

Right.

And that would have been two wrongs not making a right.

Maybe if Austin had gotten more opportunities earlier, the team wouldn't have made the Roy Williams mistake?

Why is that a given?

Free was better than Colombo two years ago, yet who started the Vikings playoff game even when he was in no shape to?

I can see Garrett being loyal to Colombo esp if he was injured. But he wouldn't have started an injured Colombo over Young if Young was better uninjured.

Why not? The team did the same with Free two years earlier.

The team needs to see what some of the young players on this team have or do not have.

No more James Martens or Pat McQuistans who stay on the roster only to be moved away from any position where they may have to actually play.

No doubt about that.

I think it's a philosophical mistake that this team doesn't value offensive linemen like they should - and it continues to cost them.

I don't know if anyone would have any insight on this, but is there a chance they think Young can actually play RT next year?
This is merely my opinion. I believe if we roll the dice on our OL 1 more year it is entirely because they see Young as a fallback option if Colombo fails. I honestly think they like both of those guys a lot and they believe Young needs another year or at least part of a year before they turn it over to him.

However, I do not believe that faith in him or Colombo stops them for one minute if they can get Castonzo or Smith.

I sure hope not.

Honestly, I can't see how they could even consider another year with Colombo out there.

He was awful. If one of RG or RT are not addressed, it's going to be pretty ugly.

Jason Garrett might be able to get the players to bust their ***** but we're talking about resurrecting a body that doesn't look to be able to to do it. Colombo looked so incapable at times it was sad.

How can they think of 'rolling the dice' on this same bunch for another year? They may as well write-off 2011 if they're thinking of that because if the parts don't change, the results won't either.

And I don't see how or why they would have faith in Colombo.

He had turf toe which destroyed his quickness. That said, he's always hurt so I understand wanting someone else.

If you remember, they wanted to give Austin more opportunities. But he always seemed dinged up.

He was on track to receive significant time in 08', but hurt his knee in the PS game against Denver. He wasn't fully back when we pulled the trigger on Roy.

Also, he really struggled hanging onto the ball early in his career. He really did need to develop.

Good topic.

I agree that it was puzzling last year that they didn't get him in the last game or two....we were playing for pride and that's great and all , but it is hard to imagine that he couldn't have at least equalled what Colombo was doing at that point.

And honestly, I don't understand why Young would need that much development time. He was a 5 star recruit coming out of college. He played in a pro style offense under Charlie Weis and was a four year starter. He was supposed to be about as pro ready from a technique point as just about any tackle in the draft. The reasons he lasted in the draft is because he was felt to have physical limitations and that he had limited upside potential.

When you consider the teams that seem to be perennially good, they all seem to draft and develop their OL in house. We are the exception, the team that goes out and buys them in free agency.

Hearing Hostile and Sdogo's input makes me feel a bit better that they do like him and think that he is still a viable candidate going forward.

Sort of.....

Remember, two years ago 3/5 of our starting OL were homegrown. Free, Gurode, and Adams.

But I do see your point....the last few years we've done a poor job of developing OL. We seem to have very little patience.

I wouldn't. But I do not have the knowledge that the staff does about injuries or other factors that could have held people back. I won't even pretend to know more than they do about what these guys are capable of.

But at the same time, do you completely trust their judgement on the matter, given their recent history regarding both the draft and who they do and don't play?

I know I don't.

Personally, I'm tired of Colombo always having some 'issue' as an excuse for poor play. Always some explanation for him being terrible and the team not replacing him.

I could accept his return on one condition - a significant paycut and a backup role. Otherwise I hope they say goodbye.

He simply can't get it done as a starter anymore.

There's only one answer as to why Young didn't play last year. An aging and unhealthy Colombo was better than he was.

oo thats right, that win would vault us to the playoffs, oh wait it didnt.

Really? I don't think Colombo is one to use anything for an excuse. He came back early from a broken bone two years ago. You can harp on the coaching staff for putting him in too early, but not sure how you can blame Colombo for that.

Not saying I don't think Colombo isn't done. Just that he isn't the kind that uses excuses.

Very good point that is probably going to be completely glossed over.

I see the issue with home grown talent, but I also think that homegrown really only needs to be your tackles since they'll cost the most via the free agency route. If you're not breaking the salary cap piggy bank open, there's no reason to not use free agency to fill the holes on the offensive line as we have done with Columbo, Kosier, and Davis.

It seems to me that people get myopic when these types of discussions regarding drafting come around. Jerry doesn't have short arms and deep pockets. We strike out here and there as do all teams, but Jerry will go after the FA talent to shore up the leaks.

Sure drafting our safeties would be nice, but I'm not going to worry if Huff and Sensy are out there for a few years so we can fixate on other areas of need via the draft.

The record of the Dallas cowboys over the last 10 years as regards the O line should make ANYONE leary of trusting what they say or do there. When you have developed a grand total of 3 good starting O linemen in 16 years, that group deserves no trust.

Kid was a rookie last season really was not expecting much last year from him. Will see how he progresses
