Everyone has their opinion of Jerry, right? The majority of fans that dog him say he is not a real football guy. Well, what is a real football guy and where do they come from?

How did Gruden, Shanny, Holmgren, etc., become football guys? Were they born football guys? Or, did they become real football guys because they played NFL football?

I'm not neccessarly defending Jerry, I just want to know why most of you blame everything on him for this team's failure because he is not a "real football guy".

For example, how did you become what your profession is? How did you learn to do what you do?

Some say Jerry needs to hire a real GM. So what is a real GM and how did they become real GM's?

This always confused me when people say Jerry needs to hire a real football guy. So, just exactely what constitutes a "real football guy" in your opinions?

And, remember, if there is such a thing as a real football guy, just how did they become one?

It's like former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's definition of pornography: "I know it when I see it." Right now, we ain't seeing it.

That's a cop out answer.

What are your reasons/opinions of what a real football guy is, and how did they become one?

What gets me is, Jerry has as many qualifications as many others to be a real "football man". He was an offensive lineman for a team that won a national championship under one of the best and most respected coaches in college football in Frank Broyles.

But either Jerry just doesn't have the talent for it, or he loves the circus and making money even more than he does becoming a "football man". Probably both.

Well, "real" football men are usually hired based on merit, not self-appointment. One way to get around this is to strike oil in Oklahoma, make millions, buy an NFL franchise, and imperiously declare yourself to be a "football man." The end.

Oh... You know, someone like a Ron Wolf or Bill Polian who lives and breathes football and is talented at finding talented players and coaches and putting together a team.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. :)

No, I'm serious because I, myself, really don't know! However, I hear everyone saying that the Cowboys need a real football guy.

How did Ron Wolf or Polian become football guys. You say they breathe football, so I guess Jerry does not? Or if he does, maybe his breath stinks?

I'm not here defending Jerry, I just want to be educated on what others think a real football guys is and how they got there. I don't want to hear fluff answers like they breathe football, or strike oil wells and nonsense like that...I just want an educated opinion of how people become "real football guys"?

Where did these real football guys get this merit? See, that's what I want to know, because I really don't know.

In essence, they mean a good GM. Not someone who divides his thought and energy between putting the best team together and marketing/selling a high-profile team... Because they can be conflicting goals.

You sure you're not defending Jerry? :) I think I've been sucked.:

Someone whose need to stroke his ego doesn't get in the way of intelligent football decisions. Someone who understands football enough that they don't run off the coach who assembled one of the most talented teams of all time when the players were just reaching their prime, then proceed to run it into the ground with poor personnel decisions because he fancies himself as a talent evaluator instead of hiring a "real football guy".

Now, that is a good thought! You make a very good point there.

Again, no, I'm not defending Jerry because I'm just as disappointed as the rest of you.

So, if Jerry hired someone to promote the team and he just GM's the team, would he become a "real football guy"?

What is a real football guy? I'm not after hearing about Jerry's shortcomings, I want to know what constitutes a real football guy? Everyone uses that word! Tell me what that means, that's all.

I'll take a stab at this.....................

Certainly, and evidently, one qualification of "a real football" guy would include someone whose entire adult career included involvement in advanced tier football. Be it a hardy college background, or straight to the pros from early on.
It seems to me that Jerry, while he did indeed play the game at Arkansas, that his "hands on" involvement in the game took a 20-30 year sabbatical. After college (at what? 22 yrs old or so), he embarked on his oil-career and obviously did very well.

He didn't re-insert himself into "anything football" in a practical-hands-on way until he bought the Cowboys in '89. I haven't Googled it, but he probably graduated college in the sixties, so that's a good deal of time away from the game.

A "real" football guy, from what I gather, remained "in the game" at one level or another since high school or college. It's his career. His Life. All he ever knew. Every Head Coach or GM that I know of, never left to be a banker or a lawyer or plumber or baker for a couple decades, and then decided he wanted "back in" to the game.

Does this mean that Jerry doesn't have the right to buy a Pro Football Team? Of course not. But unless you've been "bleeding" the game of football, and nothing else since childhood, it appears that you're not "a football man".
