This tells what happened that nite, I was wanting to know more about
The firecracker and did it malfunction, was his hand burnt or blown up?
This does say he was trying to light a stick, that sounds like some sort of Roman candle.

The wind kept blowing out his lighter (trying to save him) but he kept on and it lit,
and from this it does seem like a malfunction, the whole thing blew up probably
out the bottom, I think there was some explosive force to break finger bones,
but also intense heat, enough to burn skin off his hand and fingers.

Burning your skin is bad , but burning it totally off is hard for me to even imagine.
If you read this, it is not long, you will see JPP has a great perspective on it and in dealing with
it and his future.
He might just be a better player this year, as he is very determined to prove he can still play.

This one incident cost him his hand and millions in earnings.
using a lighter is not a good way to light firecrackers, and is more dangerous.
I used to use the sticks that slow burned with no flame.

I think either too much flame was used to light this, or it was maybe defective, but
it also shows fireworks are not safe, and people dont know enough to use them safely.
Many people are injured every year, but oddly it doesnt show up in the media or news.

So be careful and dont be one of the ones who get hurt.
I quit using fireworks many years ago. I let others buy them and set them off and watch at safe distance.

I salute JPP for his current attitude, totally positive, which would be hard to do.

Silver fused fireworks can be lit via "punks" as we called them as kids. Green fuse fireworks need a little more especially in windy conditions. Firecrackers were normally silver fuse while bigger rockets and firecracker (m80) were green fused.

yeah punks were what I used.
for the ones needing a flame , then the charcoal lighters, the ones with long barrel should be used , and probably goggles or safety glasses.

From what I read it is surprising JPP didnt suffer eye damage.

Just before midnight, after an evening of shooting fireworks into the sky, Pierre-Paul decided he’d had enough. But then a friend pointed out that the U-Haul was almost empty. Shouldn’t they pop off the last few?

With his shirt off, Pierre-Paul obliged—or at least tried to. He attempted seven times to apply flame to fuse, to ignite a stick that would send a stream of colors rocketing into the night, but the wind kept blowing out his lighter. He remembers thinking, Let me try one more time. . .

Suddenly, success—and then an eruption, a bang and a blinding green-and-white light that, witnesses say, swallowed Pierre-Paul’s 6' 5", 278-pound frame. “I remember a big flash, and I heard boom!” says Farraw Germain, the mother of Pierre-Paul’s then eight-month-old son, Josiah. “There was a lot of smoke.” Pierre-Paul sensed trouble right away. “As soon as I saw the green light, I jumped,” he says. “I knew something dangerous was about to happen.”

Pierre-Paul dropped to the grass. But when he arose he smelled nothing, felt nothing. Then he heard Germain shriek in terror, “Your hand!”

A few years ago, I put a mortar in the tube upside down and lit it. It blew the tube and lit my palm tree on fire. Good times.
