lets say 7 offensive lineman. Say its the 3rd quarter and 3 are injured. Will the NFL let you play 1 non active offensive lineman, or do you have to forfeit the game?

Thanks for the info.

I would venture to say you put a TE in there to play, you wouldnt forfeit the game. But I would think if the rest of the OL are inactive, they are inactive, they can't play.

I remember watching a Skins/Eagles game almost 20 years ago-neither Mark Rypien nor Stan Humphries played b/c of injuries, so Jeff Rutledge got the start. However-he went down later in the game, and they were forced to put in Brian Mitchell(their KR) to finish the game. They ended up scoring a TD under him, FWIW.

Pt being that it doesn't matter-as long as the game is still going on, you can only go with what you have ACTIVE. No ifs, ands, buts, or excuses.

No. The other team has to give you one of their offensive linemen so the game can continue.

Only a non active QB can enter the game to play. Once he does, the active QBs are done for the day.

My question is why is there a limit on active players anyway? What is the purpose? It seems like if you have 53 on the roster you ought to be able to suit up and play 53 players.

It's to mitigate the effects of injuries and acts like a pseudo-injured reserve list.

By the way, only 46 players can even be in uniform -- the 45 active plus the third quarterback. The other inactives are in street clothes.

I thought that only happened if the 3rd QB entered before the 4th qtr or if you played him instead of the backup.

this actually happened once in philly when mcnabb went down and instead of playing the backup they played the 3rd qb which would normally mean the 2nd string was out even if the 3rd got hurt, but since it didn't happen till the 4th qtr then the 2nd string was able to come back in...

Bill Zimmerman, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.: What was with the Eagles being allowed to use their "emergency quarterback" even though Koy Detmer never came into the game? Seems to me the "emergency QB" should only be allowed into the game if both active quarterbacks fall to injury. Is it something the competition committee might address at some point?

Mickey: No, the committee already has. Your logic used to be the NFL rule on this, that using the third quarterback meant the active two were not allowed to play again in that game. But the NFL changed that rule a few years back in hopes of helping teams develop young quarterbacks - give teams a chance to use the inactive third quarterback at the end of blowouts. So the rule is now, a team can use the inactive third quarterback in the fourth quarterback without automatically making the top two inactive, as they would have to do in any of the first three quarters. And that is why backup Koy Detmer was allowed back into the game to hold on the Eagles 60-yard, game-winning, field-goal attempt.

Quick question....

Theebs posted some pics from the the Monday night game against the Eagles the other day, and there was a shot of Amendola and what looked to be another practice squad guy (Ryan Gibbons?). Is it common practice for PS guys to attend home games like that, or was it just because it was pre-game that they were allowed on the field?

It's just like players who are on IR, that come to the home games. by being on the PS they are still a part of the team, like those on IR.
