Broaddus said something interesting last Saturday. That the draft board was completed already (no surprise). But he said the last week before the draft, the focus at VR is about all the spy and intelligence stuff.

He said our pro personnel people (three of them now accd. to a list on this board lately) get together with all our scouts and go over other teams and what players they might be lusting over. The competition.

It's fun to think of what they are talking about exactly. The pro personnel guys part I understand: for maybe especially the 10-15 or so teams picking above us, you want to know what they need. The pro personnel people are suggesting needs of the competition, maybe bad contracts other teams are looking to replace rookies with, doing mock drafts for them almost. It helps that a fair number of our scouts have worked for some of those other teams and know how they do business and this factors in. All the scouts talk about whether other teams might have ranked the 20-30-40 guys (in all rounds) we really like higher or lower than what we think. (I think it comes down to a handful of players you worry about because you can't take all 110 guys on our draft board down to this level of detail.)

The funner part is what the scouts are contributing to these meetings. Like "I counted five scouts from Green Bay at Dez Bryant's private workout" so you factor that in. (Although I've read that teams will bluff interest both ways, by attending and by not attending. Very interesting.) ... Maybe call ex-coaches, agents, the players themselves (?) ... to see if they'll be honest with you about who your competition is.

Then (in my imagination) all that stuff goes into laptops and when one of those teams, still needing a fullback, is picking ahead of you, your laptop starts flashing and goes crazy to warn you, maybe a Willie Nelson ringtone. (In the past, the actual draft magnetic board doesn't get much attention on draft day from what I've seen. It's purpose (I think) is so that the thing can be formulated while everyone can look at it and talk about it. When it's completed the final draft board gets loaded into laptops for the honchos sitting around the War Room.)

BTW FWIW I've read the Cowboys rank a player on their board either upper or lower round. By draft day you aren't concentrating on the player's exact numerical grades like 6.83 on a scale of 10 or something. So if you have three guys whose round value (and who you really like) is the Upper Third Round (where let's say you have a pick) and all three of those guys are already picked, you decide whether to take one of the few guys you have ranked as Lower Third Round value right then or whether to try to trade down so that the player's round-value matches up better with where you are picking them.

Obviously I'm bored and ready for 6:30 p.m. ... sorry for my stream of thought. Anybody got a deck of cards?
