It seems like I notice a lot of information on Doug Free so far during training camp but not a whole lot on Marten. Anyone have any info on how he's doing?

ok if you go back and look at the broadcast that DC made, nate newton talks about james marten

he said he wasnt strong enough last year, has gained from what i understood about 20 pds in his legs and leg strength, and Marten is playing backup to both guard positions;

in some practices, if you look at archers live practices, you will see he is stilll getting pushed back sometimes by tank johnson etc,

so looks like he has a ways to go yet, get a little more nastier and stronger and learn how to use his hands

Funny you should say that as I was thinking that Martin has become the forgotten man.

From what I remember, he was just doing "o.k." Nothing really special.

Small blurb in one of the many blurbs said he'd been moved to guard. Forgot which side, though.

Not too much on any of the backup inside guys... Guess it's hard to tell a lot when they aren't always going full out.

All I've heard is Nate say that Jamie (he always calls him Jamie for some reason) lacked leg strength last year... Said he worked on that this offseason and gained 10 pounds and got a lot stronger.

he is playing both sides as backup, mostly left some, since Bigg Leonard Davis is there alot, but marten from what i could tell about what nate newton said, he needs to get a little more stronger and nastier, that will come in time and playing

remember marten didnt hardly play in any preseason games last year due to him being too light at 280,

hudson houck willl fix that with him,

I sort of get the feeling that Martin needs another year to develop into his frame.

I think T Landry's 3 year plan definitely goes into effect with Martin.

Grizz and Shango on the dcfanatic radio show said he is at Guard and struggling a little bit.

I think he projected at G by most scouts -- really, I think last year was about the team seeing if he had the potential to play T at this level with a ready-made mentor in fellow BC alum Columbo.

yep some teams said the cowboys reached for him at OT, maybe better suited reports were at guard or even center, in draft reports that is

Wow thanks for all the info guys, much appreciated. Marten played G in his sophomore and junior years at BC right? Hopefully it's a quick transition for him.

Nate is supposed to go over the backup OL tonight on the Fox Southwest training camp show. DCFanatic has been great about recording those, so keep an eye out for that.

I doubt they would draft an OL at 280, he was 309 last year.

thats not what i meant, he was that weight when they drafted him at 308 or whatever, but after camp started he dropped down to 280, at least thats what was said about him, and why he didnt play so much, he wasnt in shape or whatever and lost some weight in camp,

that he was too light then at 280 at OG,

even at OT, was too light weight, last year when training camp started,

i think what hurt marten too, was that he held out of camp, and he lost bonus money because there was none left by time he signed, and not being in shape at the start, and losing those precious days of start of camp,

he got behind and lost out in playing time and conditioning

I remember being very surprised when we drafted OT James Marten in the 3rd round while OT Doug Free was still undrafted. Most scouting reports ranked Free higher then Marten. Was very glad when we lucky enough to draft Free with our 2nd pick in the 4th round. Free is just an incredible athlete, able to run quickly down the field to block, etc.

agree sago, nate newton said Doug Free was the man to take over at LOT in the future,

i remember reading reports that his nickname was the Freak due to his imposing speed downfield, and his nastiness

Kinda strong, and i think he got stronger this offseason,

from what i could tell at training camp last year, free and marten are good friends since they were drafted together

i think if that is the case, that free will push marten to become better,
