Fellas Ive recently started to write down some of the thoughts of parcells about the game of football in a note book as im aspiring to coach football sometime in the next year or so. Im wondering what are some things you fellas and ladies have learned about the game, motivating players etc from listening to Parcells over the last few years at his pcs?

I ve really enjoyed listening to him over the past couple of years and feel like i learned alittle something more about football, coaching football, inspiring people to be there best, discipline and mental toughness.

I thought the Tyson Thompson stuff in pre-season was interesting as far as figuring out *how* a player learns things best, and then using that method to teach him.

That and the fact that you can't buy a QB at the local Texaco.

I've learned that reporters are becoming kind of useless. Most of what they get is from the PC. Maybe it was always like this but being able to hear the PC makes it obvious that nobody is getting much inside scoop.

I've noticed that all reporters hang on BP's every word...Why, easy.

He doesn't let coach's or players talk to the media. They have no where else to go. Pure genious.

IMO, if the press gets wind of what you are really doing behind closed doors, then you have a very poorly run organization. Sure it is tough on us fans not knowing everything, but if we don't know, chances are other teams don't either.

There some good bits you can grab from BP that can be used in more places than just football...

Some real quick ones...

You are what you are... sounds simple, but it's easy to make excuses or try to reason otherwise

There are some people who may never be "starters", but they may still have a role just as important and can make them just as valuable

It's easier to coach or push people when things are going well or you are winning

Don't eat the cheese

You don't really need superstars, but you do need leaders and people who help to invigorate others to execute at a higher level

I generally agree with this Al. Hard on the fan base but probably better over all for the team.

the press conference he talked about thompson in was a good one. i think parcells does a great job of bringing up points that the average fan wouldn't think of. i've definately learned a lot more about the game than i ever did from a campo or gailey press conference.

Campo's press conferences could be taped and repeated over and over again.

couldnt agree more.

These so-called reporters are a real let down.

I like their pagelong columns better when they're summed up in one sentence by BP during his press conferences. Thanks for making a worthless 3,000 word story out of one quote from the head coach.

I've learned that BP is anything but consistent. He says one thing about using guys he knows and trusts and then sends Condo, Romo and Cortez out to help execute PATs and FGs. Now we have another young unproven snapper.

Or says how if you're going to be a player you need to play special teams like Woodson had in the past. Then he goes and removes Davis from ST because he's the starting FS.

Or says how you have to play smashmouth football with the lead and then approves throwing plays from Payton on running downs where there had been running success the previous play.

Not saying he's not a great coach, but my opinion of BP as an in-game coach/decision maker has taken a few notches down in the past year. Master motivator, great disciplinarian, good talent/character evaluator but getting a little worried about the other stuff.

I learned that he admired Tom Landry and took some of his advice and philosophies. I enjoyed knowing that. Made me realize along with his naming his daughter Dallas, that he really did want to be here. I worried that he was a NY guy and this was just a pit stop on the way to the HOF.

I hope he can finish this course and add to his legacy with a Super Bowl or 2 and that when he leaves the team will be in good shape for a number of years. I do not agree with everythign he does or says, but I like what he is trying to do for the most part.

They're sometimes mildly amusing. Nothing of real substance. A lot of fluff. Oh, but what fun it is knowing how the press core in utterly enamored by Bill. Terrified, yet yearning for his love and attention.

My favorite is when he's in a good mood. Maybe after a win, Parcells might talk some special teams with the press gathering. Perhaps a techinical observation or two. And I love the obligatory Dave Meggett anecdotes.

But that in mind, I'd much rather it be this way as opposed to what we've seen out at VR, prior to Bill Parcells. That place, that team was as open a book as there was in pro football. Way, way too much access.

I've learned that the media covering the Cowboys have no clue how to ask a question, and spend more time asking the same thing over and over trying to create a story, instead of phrasing a question that allows Parcells to expound.

The best moments over the two plus years have been when he has gotten the rare open-ended question, and gone on for 4 or 5 minutes actually explaining how he coaches and why he does things the way he does.

Unfortunately we get much less insight into what is going on...not all of it is by design, history shows Parcells will tell more about things if he can do it on his terms...and most of the high-lights have been him letting the media have it when they piss him off with the stupid repetitive questions.

I never bothered to listen to campos press conferences after i listened to a few . just found them really boring . with parcells I always learn alittle bit or at least laugh alittle bit .

my favorite was last week ....

the reporter asks parcells , do you think staying out here another week in california will give this team a better chance to form some bonding?? parcells response '''Bonding?? I didnt come out here for bonding , i think you ve been watching to many shows during the afternoons'' . haha I was laughing awhile over that one

Bingo...

I've learned that the stories about Parcells loving size weren't exaggerations.

I've been surprised to see that he truly does, for some reason, favor players and coaches that have northeast ties.

I've also learned that the anecdotes Parcells tells about the old days are largely filibusters designed to avoid talking about this week's game. Ten or fifteen minutes spent talking about Harry Carson and David Meggett are ten or fifteen minutes that can't be spent answering questions about how a certain rookie is developing or which players might be active this Sunday. ;)

I have learned that he doesn't seem to think to highly of Brett Farve. When defending his previous Qb's from the Media (mainly Vinny), he always uses Brett as an example of other QB's in the league who seem to struggle when playing from behind.

Never seems sastisfied about the actual game. Even more so after a loss. Can always pinpoint where the mistakes break down during the play that the average fan wouldn't see.

I love that he never lets the media get the upperhand or have the chance to hype a certain player or players up from there viewpoints. Wants them to focus on the whole team.

Overall I have learned alot of great detail about the game by just listening to him and his philosophy.
