What I saw from the defensive line

So I've rewatched some of the games and I've noticed an issue. The defensive line has no push. Last year we would see the defensive line push offensive lines back toward the qb, that's when dlaw comes from the perfect angle and sack... who did we lose in the middle?

Woods and Crawford was out against the Dolphins. Took quiz. a few quarters to get acclimated to the speed of the game, I guess.
Woods went out early in the Washington game.

But there were times last year there was not a push either, so I do not think it just happened this year. It has been a problem for a while.

Still a work in progress. Will wait to see how it comes together before going off the deep end.

The Cowboys defense has shown more respect for the running game of their opponents than the passing game of their opponents in all 3 games up to this point.

They ended last year getting gashed for 273 rushing yards by the Rams. They've been more conservative this year to hold up and maintain their gaps instead of just rushing up-field and playing the run as an after-thought. The big run by Barkley early in game 1 seemed to further push them into a conservative approach to playing the run.

Crawford started the first 7 games at DT last season as Collins recovered from injury (Collins missed 3 games and was limited in others until he started in game 8).

At 285 pounds I don't think Crawford was Bull-Rushing interior OL too often last season.

Collins is healthier than last season therefore I don't think his ability to Bull-Rush would have decreased.

A. Woods was out for the Miami game. He does get a bit more push than Covington who started at 1-tech against Miami but I don't think their is a big difference.

Rookie Trysten Hill played both 1-tech and 3-tech DT against Miami. He did not really attempt to Bull-Rush very often. The backups last season (Ross & Reid) didn't really get much push either.

Summary: The Cowboys DTs have not been as anxious to shoot gaps and be susceptible to getting gashed by the run as they have been at times in the past.

As far as the DT interior goes:

Maliek: –as what’s been much of his career, he will continue to flash and have mere moments here and there on occasions, he may have 2 tackles for losses, and half a sack. But the problem is he will have those kind of moments over a 3 game span vs having them all in one game. More tease than substance. You won't see a guy that is consistently getting in the backfield and changing the dynamics of interior trenches. - and don'tcha feel it’s only a matte of time before those usual wheels-injuries creep upon him as what usually happens yearly with him?

- Crawford: continues to do his best work when he is in nickel rush packages in the interior, as seen by his stunt/twist move to the outside to lone sack vs Skins.
If he is starting or subbing at DE, he easily gets handled by most OTs. So if/when he is out, we lose some ability at nickel DT. Waiting on vet Kerry Hyder to take up slack as he basically
a Crawford type role player.

- A. Woods: " Human Log " come and goes too often to me, I didn’t care for how he does so well at home/but struggled on road vs run in 2018.
Imo, He’s just serviceable enough until we can get a more impact 1 tech guy.

- Covington: This is guy I’m watching out more than “ Human Log “ but not sure if he is enough of full time difference maker and if he can sustain more than just in rotation packages.
But he was after the QB vs Miami on a couple occasions including a hit on Rosen that took him out of game for a short time. I’d like to see how he fairs in this 4-3 vs Texan’s 3-4 long term wise.

T. Hill – rookie clearly a work in progress, but he showed some mobility, hustle, pursuit ability in his NFL debut. I still want to re-watch his work vs Fin's in limited rotation role.
But questions remain if Trysten will continue to get rotation snaps and game -day active once both Crawford and Woods are due to return.

- Team may be taking look at reserve DE joe Jackson inside at nickel to see if he helps to get a push. Expect a lot of experimenting and change up packages inside as season goes on.
This unit overall could prove to be our Achilles heel come playoff time.

- The kind of sheer ability and impact performance the Cowboys would love in the interior is David Irving 2017 short year where between 4 game suspension and 4-5 games missed
due to high ankle sprain- he still amassed 7 sacks in just 8 games in just rotation/nickel role.
But we don’t have that kind of player on this roster at this time.

Our DT position is pretty much filled w/ backup/rotational types. Hill is still unknown at present.
IMO (not worth much I know LOL), we need to use our 1st in ‘20 draft to grab the best DT left on the board and take one in the 4th or so. We gotta find some DT’s who can get push like Hicks does for the Bears.

Hicks and Goldman both. I desperately wanted Goldman in the 15 draft over Byron, but at least Byron has turned out!!!

We don’t have a DT that would start for a decent let alone great defense

We didn’t lose anybody, we’ve not had anybody

For as much as Rod was preaching 3Tech..they should have had a difference maker in their by now.

Yep.
Really hoping Covington can step forward and be a solid interior guy.

I don't have the football acumen of guys like Walker. However, from what I've observed, the 3 tech is only effective next to a guy who an anchor.

I can dig that concept, even Sapp had Booger, Donald had Suh.

Cowboys need both.

I never thought Randy Gregory would make this much a difference
Gregory was notable for his run defense in college. I don't know how many run snaps he was in on last year. I do know early in the year Taco played most run downs

Marinelli needs to change his rush package. Keep a DT at the 1 so collins gets 1 on 1 inside.
