Read Grizz's account of the Wade Phillips press conference today. A few things I liked but overall I'm left feeling like he's afraid to hold people accountable and too willing to take extenuating circumstances into account.
What do I wish he would say? I took the liberty of writing his speech for him. See below.
Wade: "I’m the guy most responsible for team success each week so this disappointing performance starts with me. So as I stand here I take full responsibility for yesterday’s totally unacceptable performance overall. The buck stops here. Obviously course correction is in order and that starts right here as well. That’s my responsibility and you can darn well be assured that I understand that and I take it very seriously. I’m embarrassed by what happened yesterday and I don’t plan on experiencing that again anytime soon if ever.
Now if anyone thinks that yesterday’s poor performance was all a result of something Wade Phillips didn’t do well, I can assure you I don’t feel that way. You don’t get yesterday’s results from 1 person falling short. It doesn’t take a genius to come to that conclusion. So should my players and coaches expect me overall to be looking for more than they gave me this past week in preparation, effort, execution, emotion and results? Absolutely! Why would anyone expect otherwise? I guarantee you that this league is about continuous improvement and the person who gave the best performance last week amongst us all, well I need more this week from him. So let there be no question about who I expect to step it up this week over last week. It’s everyone! No exceptions!
I’m not looking to call people out publicly. Where individual attention is required, be assured they will get it, professionally, but pointedly. I expect all those folks to respond positively and search themselves and amongst themselves for how they personally can step it up over last week. I expect them to help each other in that process and to do so professionally but effectively.
Is this a crisis? Yes! That simply means that yesterday’s performance and the trend preceding it is absolutely unacceptable. I have higher expectations than that and I believe most if not all of our players and coaches share those with me. If they don’t, then that’ll become clear along the way and we’ll move those folks out of the organization because we cannot achieve our goals with anything short of 100% commitment by 100% of the people. Right now, I don’t believe we have many of those folks (slackers) but its time for each and every one to demonstrate that to themselves and each other. That’s not a threat and it doesn’t make anyone a bad person. It simply makes them ill-suited for our organization and what we are 100% committed to accomplishing here.
So we start anew today. Our goal is to put the best performance possible on that field this Sunday no matter our injuries or special situations. Every single one of these games count. There is no margin for error. Right now, someone’s past credentials don’t mean a whole lot to me. Why should they? I need performance NOW not a press clipping that tells me what you did last week. The Rams didn’t respect our past accomplishments one iota. They said “Lets see what you got today?” And then they showed themselves to be the better team TODAY! That’s why when you look in the standings it’ll have a W next to their name and an L next to ours. It’s all based on what they did on that day. That’s the way it’ll be settled on Sunday so I have no choice but to use that same measure in making preparations for that day starting now."
Excuses himself from the podium and gets to work...
