I was just wondering what our options would be if Roy Williams were to get injured at any point this year? Having him play up in the box is going to be critical to the success of the defense this year, and if we had to do without him what adjustments could we make?

wouldn't miss too much as Davis could slide into the SS position and hit people just about as hard and cover just about as well. We have plenty of S's on the roster at this point. We'd miss some of Roy's big plays, but I think Davis could handle the position okay. I think SS is his natural position anyway. I hate the way we force round pegs into square holes....making Davis play FS and Torrin Tucker play Tackle....its a waste IMO.

Beriult, Davis, Are sitting there, waiting on Roy to get hurt, would there be a drop yes, will it hurt our team majorily No.

not much you can do about that, when you dont have any depth eh?

you're correct, but we never re-adjust once we find someone else....we never moved Tucker back to G once we moved him to T, even though we continually saw his inability to play T. We just let him burn.
Honestly, I was a little surprised that we re-signed KD to play FS. I think he'd make a phenomenal SS but will always be a bit of a liability at FS. Now we have about 4 true FS's on the roster, betcha we keep forcing KD to play FS, what do ya think?

i dont think we force anyone to do anything, if watkins or any of the other FS out play Keith Davis then they will be starting, Right now its his job to lose, since i for one dont think he did that bad down the strech, but again, i actaully watch every play, instead of one.

ha.. you guys crack me up sometimes.. you really think that losing Roy wouldnt affect our defense that much?? you know how many big plays and turnovers he creates? you know how intimidating he is and how he electrifies our defense and how our defense plays off his intimidation and presence? he is one of THE top safeties in the league and very diverse.. playing him in the box gives this defense an element that most teams would dream of.. and you think that Keith Davis or Justin freakin Beriault can come in and there wont be much of a dropoff? haha..

lol i love the guys who belive that one guy can cause a defense to fall apart, with Ware, Spears, CAnty, Carpenter, AA, James, Davis, Newman, Henry, i mean i can contiune with names, of people that can create big plays on the D. Maybe two years ago when Roy was surrodend by just Woodson, he would have hurt our defense badly, but now, we just have ot many good guys on our team, for our defense to just fall apart because the great and all might Roy williams, is injured

fall apart? no..

make a major difference? yes..

and you say "i love the guys who believe that one guy can cause a defense to fall apart".. you think the 2000 Ravens would have been nearly as dominant without Ray Lewis? you think the 1985 Bears would have been nearly as dominant without Mike Singletary? they would have still been very very good, but not dominant.. well, Roy is our Lewis, he is our Singletary..

another funny thing is, you start to mention all the names of the guys surrounding him.. and there is a lot of potential and some good players there.. but do you guys realize that with Glover gone, Roy is our only defensive player to even make the Pro Bowl?

Which then begs the question, would we be wise to spend a lot of money keeping Roy if we can find someone cheaper that can hit people about as hard and cover just as well....?

Like, invest that money into the OL? QB?

Tucker may be the next Lehr... and if anyone thinks the loss of ROY would not effect the D ina negative way do not watch the games ona regular basis!!!

I'm sorry, but while losing RW wouldnt cripple the team the way losing Flozelle Adams did, Keith Davis is not even 1/4 the player Williams is

the idea is laughable...Davis is a fringe player who's probably best suited to a backup role, RW is a probowl player

as for "forcing" a position on Tucker or Davis...niether guy is a starting calibar player in the first place...they were starters at the positions they were at because of severe talent defiencies and/or injuries

Playing Williams up in the box isn't that critical. It makes the defense more potent if he does, but, the improvement at linebacker and safety makes Roy playing up in the box a luxury, not a necessity.

not saying we wouldn't lose anything...just saying I don't think losing RW would be catastrophic to our D.
SS isn't the most critical position on our defense and not the most difficult one to play.
Davis isn't going to change games the way Roy can and sometimes does, but I think that if Davis had to replace Roy at SS, he wouldn't be a weak link teams were able to frequently exploit.

Losing Roy would hurt. But there are players whose injuries would hurt our team more.

i believe it was hurt the team mentally as much as physically, like i heard in an interview once, when roy makes a big hit, everyone gets fired up and wants to play better, i see him as more of an 'on the field' leader than a locker room leader, but he is still a leader
