I am sure running an NBA team is far different than running a NFL team.
Used to be, and I think it was still around when Jerry bought the Cowboys, or maybe it started changing right before that.

But of the 4 major sports, cross majority ownership was not allowed. At least for owning an NFL team.
I think, and can't remember the year, or teams involved, they finally approved a MLB owner or maybe it was an NBA owner to purchase a NFL team.

I don’t think the Cowboys would have been more successful than Jerry in the 90s.

Buss did own the Kings and no success happened. Just playoff appearances.

The Lakers are a hot mess right now. They won't be winning anything soon. They have had hot mess periods in the past as well. Before LeBron won in 2019-2020 they had 6 or 7 consecutive years of being under .500 (I am going from memory) and nobody wanted to play with Kobe.

As much as I’d prefer a different regime over the past 25 years, I’m not trading away the chance of that 90s team.

Instead of Jerry. It almost happened:

I know many Mav fans on this site hate the Lakers, but since Dr. Buss bought the Lakers in 1979, the Lakers have the most championships (11) in NBA history. He's a great owner, who would not masquerade as a GM, and he would not have fired Jimmy. IJS

Thoughts?

All the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders would get pregnant by him. He would die of a heart attack in bed with a Cheerleader, and his children would wreck the Cowboys like they wrecked the Lakers.

Maybe, maybe not...

But we'd be better off regardless in the long run because we'd have a GM.

We might not have been the "team of the 90s" but we very well could have had at least 3 Super Bowls more spread out.
All the cheerleaders would be mommies though

Would he have won more than 3 super bowls?
Who cares. We would have been a more respectable football franchise like we were before. And provided an opportunity to win more over time instead of the small window we had before Jethro insisted on taking over full control of football operations.

Is there any Cowboy fan alive who doesn’t believe the 29 years with only 2 SB rings before Jethro arrived was a much greater , respectable and prideful era ?

Jethro has made a mess of our once proud franchise since Jimmy left. All he’s done is pimped the ride like a shiny car with wobbly wheels while ruining what was once considered one of the greatest ran franchises on the planet.

The Buss bid had another major flaw much like the Mavs original owners bid which I would have also been in favor of .

Both NBA owners would have had to sell their majority stake in order to be approved for the Cowboys purchase . Which would have taken time . Time Bum Bright didn’t have with his Savings and Loans bankruptcy. He needed cash yesterday .

Bum also had another agenda. Being that under his agreement with our original owner Clint Murchison Jr who insisted that only Tex could fire Tom. Bum knew Jethro would bring in his own guy in Jimmy which meant Tom was out.

This also motivated Bright to take the lesser bid from Jethro . He could kill two birds with one stone . Fire Landry and get out fast with the all cash offer. And why we really need to blame Bum for the Jethro era.

I would say "religious groups and other people" screwed the franchise long term. The 90's were great, but Dr Buss is one of the best to ever do it, and I'd much rather have Jeanie running the show than Steve-O. Dr Buss had the sense to hire a general manager and his ego didn't handicap his teams for nearly 30 years. Now I'm sad.

He probably would not have hired Jimmy either.
Tex Schramm had mentioned Jimmy before. It might not have happened in 1989 .

But those early years with Jimmy shouldn’t give Jethro a pass for life with the type of results he’s had since.

Who’s to say we couldn’t have had as much or more success in 33 years under more normal ownership.

the dream scenario is anyone else buys the cowboys, and then hires jimmy ! and hires a real GM when jimmy leaves at whatever point.
I mean if we are gonna day dream do it right!

My thoughts are any competent GM would have made that Herschel Walker deal with Minnesota. Then the owner would have stayed out of the way of his staff.

As painful as it still is, a competent GM would have drafted Randy Moss too. Playmaker as WR2 extends their championship window for several years.
Minnesota thought they were fleecing a couple of goobers when they made that trade. Chances are they wouldn’t have ever entertained it otherwise!
