Sort of what Dak had to do, then he got the bag. If I'm Osa, he could take the tag, BET on himself, do good, then his starting rate to ask for would have to be 25 million or more! He's not going to be tagged at 25 and say hey I'll take that 21 million you were thinking about giving me.

Nope, I had another good season, I know my worth, this is what I want! Please give your thoughts

I think the bigger issue is him playing on the tag this year than it is demanding more money next year. I mean unless he takes a significant step forward statistically the pay increase is just going to be in line with a cap increase. Him playing on the tag really kills your open cap space to play around with anything more than bargain bin FAs.

I'd prefer to either sign him long term this year or explore a tag/trade situation....only tough part of that is if you trade him you really need to get more value than you would have in just getting the comp pick you would get for letting him walk.

Anyone that doesn't take that type of money even at the nfl level is making a poor decision. 21 mm is life changing money no matter how you slice it and even if he is injured in day 1 and never plays another down he and his family are setup for life.

Yes there is a bigger contract than that waiting on him and yes there is risk of playing under the tag but how many times since the tag has been used had a tagged player had a career ending injury and not been able to get another contract?

Always risk but have to go with the sure thing and then do the right stuff in the process and it will very likely work out...

As for the Cowboys- they are morons for tagging him at that rate...they are going to have so much money locked up in their top 5 contracts that they will have zero depth

I don't disagree, I would bet they get something worked out long term, but to play devils advocate OSA also has a $25M security blanket by playing on the tag. He would also have plenty of cash to take out a nice insurance policy against injury.

It is a must that they don't do us like this, killing our options of bringing in talent to go with Osa and the others

Don't forget you're dealing with Jerry. So I don't think you've seen the final number on what he's going to make, yet.

I'll guess closer to 25.
Well if you're OSAs agent he would make $25M on the tag this year and the cap is likely to bump up another 10% next year. I'm sure that is what they are negotiating for, and this could turn into a game of chicken pretty quick. Not a good recipe for Cowboy success this year.

The guy is the anchor of the worst DL in the NFL. I don't care what it takes. We need to sign him!
True. but to command a franchise tag salary cap burden i ask. ," would he be a starter on any of the top 10 defenses?"......because he'll be paid like one

Ultimately the tag will result in us paying him more or letting him walk. I can't recall tagging a player and then paying him less. Maybe my memory fails.

2 words. Anthony Spencer.

The risk of injury is always there in the NFL. The players want long tern security not just a 1 year deal. He is not turning down a few million by signing rather than taking the franchise tag. He is giving up 10s of millions by turning down a long term deal and getting tagged.

he is and he will. he will easily get around 23M in FA market. that's why the cowboys are planning to put franchise tag on him.

And then you're going to pay Parsons?
I have no doubt that number will be in the 35+ neighborhood.

He was PFF's 31st rated DT. . So it makes obvious sense for Dallas to pay him like a top 5 DT bc that's what we do.
As much as I love PFF I think you have to be careful about just looking at the rankings. Their DI rankings put a lot of different positions into one category....3T, 1T, 3-4 Ends, etc. so 31st isnt as bad as it sounds...plus if you filter out guys who arent getting starter snaps (probably 500 or more) he's probably moving up a few spots.

If you go by just the actual grades OSA is within about 5 points of guys like Jalen Carter, Madubuike, Quinnen Williams, Ed Oliver, Vea, etc. We need to see what actual contract numbers look like. Obviously the tag will put him in top 5 money, but if the $21-22M range is accurate hes probably in that 10-13 range by AAV, around 17th if you go by % of the cap. I don't think that is too far off.

Jerry is the one taking the gamble. Jerry bets on himself all the time. And loses much more than he wins.

When was the last time he won anyway?
