What if Payton turns into a Jon Gruden in New Orleans?

I may be wrong but I think the last Dallas OC to be hired as a HC elsewhere was Norv Turner in 94. Washington hired Turner and it didn't work out. Seven long years, and not an amicable parting of ways.

Dallas fans never needed to feel that he was "one that got away".

What would the reaction of fans here be if Sean Payton is successful in New Orleans, meaning he turns out be as good as Gruden was in Oakland, and is in TB? Gruden was once a not well known Offensive co-ordinator in Philadelphia (I believe he was part of Holmgren's staff at Green Bay before he moved to Philadelphia as the OC).

So what if he does. GOod for him, the city of New Orleans deserves something to rally round. Problem is they will burn their city down and loot it. We would lose the lombardi trophy forever and could not have another superbowl. Maybe its better if they never achieve success. I like my superbowls, esepically when Dallas is in them.

Ned, is there any purpose to asking this? I mean, be serious for a minute. What if he does turn out to be a good HC. What exactly should the fans have done about that?

Over the years Dallas has seen many coaches go on to Head jobs elsewhere. I for one have always been proud of that. Why would it be any different for Sean Payton?

So, tell me because I'm curious. What is your point? It seems like a pretty transparent attempt to stir up something when there's nothing to stir up. Same as it would be if I asked the same about Saunders or Greg Williams after next year.

Hold on. I thought Payton was terrible and responsible for our inept offense.

Now he is Gruden revisited as a head coach?

C'mon Alex... you know Ned's MO: When the coach or player is still a Cowboy, they suck beyond all comprehension. Once they move on... then the Cowboys let a good one get away and we're all supposed to gnash our teeth and with a rictus snarl, yell what a horrible job Parcells is doing with the staff/player acquisition.

I really think Ned hates the Cowboys more than he loves the Commanders.

Me? I try to tune the guy out.

I like Sean Payton, but he's getting way too much hype. If anything he should be grateful that Drew Bledsoe got him a job as an NFL head coach, albeit for a pereniall loser like the Saints.

He did ok here in Dallas, but he failed to seize the opportunity in front of him working with an assassin like Bledstud. This offense should have been putting up monster numbers through the air last year with the weapons they had. Also another criticism I have with Payton is he failed miserably in utilizing Peerless Price.

He better have learned from his mistakes, especially if he picks up Matt Leinart or Vince Young in the draft. Air it out Sean!

Good for him; Bill Parcells is going to run his offense his way regardless of who the OC is. I am rooting for Payton.

Actually, I think Payton is in a no-win situation.

There are a lot of players on that team that would rather be somewhere else. I hear that quite a bit on 870 AM (the flagship station for the Saints).

Things are still very unstable here on the Louisiana and Mississippi gulf coast.

You really are off here.

Payton did very well -- he had a different QB for three years straight, had what should have been the top offensive weapon miss 1/3 of the team's games, and a bad O-line that had some unfortunate acquisitions and terrible injuries. Abolutely no chance to build any consistency was the problem with our O.

People keep saying "oh, he should have opened it up" -- that's just stupid. You can't open it up when your QB can't even get a 3-step drop because your tackles (especially your LT in the last half of the season) can't keep rushers off him.

Could utilize Price? -- how is it that he failed when Price couldn't even break into the lineup before Crayton's injury. He's been cut twice now -- more likely it is the case that he is done. Price didn't get signed -- and didn't want to be signed -- anywhere after we cut him. That tells me that the guy just isn't that into football anymore. Seriously -- Price had a single season where he was a top 10 receiver (check the stats -- 2002) -- surprise! that was right before he was going to be a free agent. Been weak since. You can't utilize a guy who clearly isn't committed.

Payton is nothing but lame duck for next year to take the heat while Benson is selling the team to someone in LA.

right.

the league is going to let the Saints move to LA. Yeah. The NFL, who maintains a tight control over team ownership is going to let the Saints leave New Orleans. Maybe before the Hurricane -- but not now.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. I honestly think he was pretty much handicapped in Dallas under Parcells. I'm sure he used it as a valuable learning experience and will take some thing with him but I hope he flourishes even though he is coaching a cursed team.

...then good for Payton, cuz we couldn't do anything to stop him from getting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

He wasnt handcuffed in NY with Giants under Fossil. Offense was very poor.

He later was handcuffed and the offense took off.

That is the Payton I see.

Like they wouldn't let Al Davis move, no way in hell Cleveland was leaving town, Baltimore? Right, tight control. Lol.

I think Payton can and will turn into a spectacular head coach. But with Bill signing on for another year, I don't know that there was a realistic way to keep Sean.

:hammer:

Right on... don't forget that Al Johnson couldn't block his way out of a wet paper sack. Crayton was WAAY more valuable than Price and he complained out loud constantly... Good riddance Useless Price.

If Sean payton turns into another Jon Gruden, then the NFC South will be one heck of a division, rivaling the East Division in the NFC. The Super Bowl could come back to the NFC real fast.
