It has been claimed that some teams draft based where they want the roster to be the following year and disregard the immediately upcoming season.

Under that concept, if we are in March of 2019, what positions would you definitely want to have filled in 2018?

Assume 2 mid tier plus free agents can be added in March 2019 and everybody from 2018 that you want to keep can be retained.

I say WR. It is too difficult and expensive to get a legit #1 WR in free agency. WRs from the draft often take a season to be really ready.

If they are in March 2019 and need a LB or 1-tech I'm not worried about getting those in free agency or the draft. A mid tier plus 1-tech and/or LB in free agency can be decent starters. Guard is a similar concept.

Many years I would say DE but if DLaw is retained for 2019 and Taco develops, then that position is in decent shape.

In your scenario, yes, I would be looking at WR with my 1st or 2nd pick

I disagree about WR being a big need in general but that's another debate.

Even if I did agree, there is not too much top end talent at the WR position this year. Bunch of #2s, but those dudes shouldn't be top selections IMO.

Also, are you watching how much FAs are signing for? If we need a legit, mid tier starter at LB or 1T it will cost is a fortune.

About half as much as mediocre WRs...

Current year FAs with what is available?

DT $8mil?
MLB$5mil?
S$7mil?

in this scenario...LB/WR I would hope get solidified.

also...if Irving is NOT apart of our team...long term...Marcus Davenport,DE-Utsa makes alot of sense...similar build to Irving...allows Taco to remain on the edge...forming a formidable duo with DLaw...Davenport assumes the role of David Irving...moving around outside/inside.
just don't think he'll be there at 19...so don't mind me.

Poe - $9 million
Hitch - $9 million
Jordy Nelson - $7 million
Crabtree - $7 million
Marqise Lee - bout $8 million
Lotuleilei - $10 million
DaQuon Jones - $7 million
Zach Brown - $8 million
Demario Davis - $8 million

All seems pretty comparable to me.

Watkins 16M

Jordy is old.
Crabtree will be 31 and the Raiders were tired of him.
Lee was the 3rd WR on his previous team.

Watkins is less accomplished as a WR than Lotuleilei as a DT.

You asked for solid, NFL starters and I gave em to you.

Watkins was terribly, terribly overpaid. He's an outlier as a dumb front office move...not the norm.

Yes, Watkins and Lotuleilei; although Lotuleilei is much more proven than Watkins.

WR. Even if Dez is in your plans until his contract is up, you need a guy now who can become your #1 when he walks

Moncrief got 9.6 million that also includes a possible 2 million more in incentives

56 catches for less than 700 yards the last two years

Robinson also got 14 million per. Him and Watkins are making 16 and 14 annually and have two combined 1000 yard seasons

That should tell you everything you need to know about the WR market

Why would Taco play anywhere but the edge? Did I miss something?

Star is coming off a PFF grade of 49...I'm not sure how good he is.
Played through injury.

Plus PFF ratings are crap.

They have good stats but their player grades are done by bloggers that they pay to "grade film" which is really just broadcast video.

I think they get like $50 per player per game or $50 per position per game.

If you see anybody strongly defend PFF then you'll know they work with PFF.

Lol. So let me get this straight. Dez playing thru injury. He needs to be cut. However, Star playing thru injury, and its all well and good because he is accomplished? Im sorry. Dez being the TD leader for this franchise must not be accomplished enough for you to start yet ANOTHER thread about Dez.

There was no talk of injury until Dez had the mage-fail game and then started blaming injuries.

WR and TE are the top two needs in this draft in my mind. Dallas will be missing Dez and Witten in 2019 and there is no proven talent there that can fill the voids left by either player. Need to draft replacements.

Pretty good perspective here.

Not to mention, Dez has had the lowest catchable pass percentage in the league since Dak took over.
