What Impact does a ..."BYE" Have on Teams?

I thought this would be an interesting football related dialogue that could have an impact on the Cowboys ...as well as every other team in the NFC-East Division.

As a Dallas Cowboys fan, as a Commanders fan, and as a Giants fan ...what are the advantages/disadvantages of going into a game after having come off of a bye-week?

Take a look (out of respect for the NFC-E, information placed in the Order of the 2005 NFC-E standings).

Giants - Bye Week: October 1, 2006 ...return to play the Skins

Pro/cons:

Commanders - Bye Week: October 29, 2006 ...return to play the Cowboys (in Washington)

Pro/cons:

Cowboys - Bye Week: September 9, 2006 ...return to play the Titans (very early Bye-week??? - comments no impact/otherwise).

Pro/cons:

Eagles - Bye Week: November 5, 2006 ...return to play the Commanders

While some fans look at the "Bye-Week" as a much deserved rest, others believe that the "Bye-Week" creates teams to lose their rythmn, or even become rusty ...timing lost, more.

Controversial Question: Should the Bye-Week be eliminated/dropped in the future?

Caveat: Yes, I know I'm an Eagles fan, if you must flame me, could you at least have the decency to wait until the end of your post. I'll reciprocate in kind.

Now give it your best shot ...if you're capable:rolleyes:

With a young team, a bye week can be both good and bad. The good of it, it gives your team an extra week to prepare for a particular opponent, a week extra of practice for that opponent, etc. With a young team, that extra week could be huge, as they can concentrate on the game plan and really get a feel for it with the extra week of practice.

The bad part of it is, with a young team, they could lose focus. They could assume they are ready for the game, when really, they aren't....Overconfidence in the fact that they prepared an extra week could also occur. Also, it could kill any momentum they had as well as timing and becoming rusty, like you said.

With an experienced and older team, it gives them an extra week of rest. I am not sure how much it matters in football (I am sure it does), but in basketball, an experienced team like the Heat needed as much rest as they could between series to keep Shaq, Zo, and some of the other veterans resting. I imagine it helps in football as well.

And any injuries that may occur...gives you an extra week to heal....

And now, you wanted an attacking comment on the Eagles at the end...and I hate to disappoint....so here....

(I initially wasn't, but since you asked so kindly....)

The Cowboys are off on September 24th not September 9th…3rd week of the season.

Having the Bye week in the 3rd week of the season is a not good thing IMO. I think it is a bit too early and that all byes should be taken between the 6th and 12th week of the season to make it equitable. By week 6 teams will have some tweaks that they can get healed up over the down time; not so much by week 3. After week 12 any team headed into the playoffs will be getting an advantage of getting to rest up and heal up before their playoff run. The league really needs to look at this situation more closely.

Otherwise, I don't really think it has much impact on the game after the bye week. The impact of the bye is more for the rest of the season than the next game. I see the 'Skins will be getting two divisional opponents coming of their bye...we'll hear some whining about that but I just don't think it is that big of a deal. Rest vs. Rust...who knows? I haven't seen any definitive study on the subject.

I personally think it disturbs team chemistry, and wish they would just drop it all together and actually add a game or 2.

You want the bye week as late in the season as possbile so you can rest up your guys, especially if your making a playoff run. I think the whole rythm thing is overrated. The Cowboys bye is way too early, by the end of the season people will have tons of annoying little injuries. One week off later in the season really helps.

More often then not it looks like the bye week really takes teams out of their rythm and routine. As far as the Cowboys are concerned and it appears most other teams, they usually come out flat in the first quarter while they work back into the pace and intensity of the game.

The only time it is good is when the team is really banged up or you are implementing a lot of new material.

I think the early bye week isn't so bad because nowadays teams really start training pretty early and by the end of training camp your body is still recovering from all the workouts and practices. An early bye week give you a chance to assess what is working and what isn't early in the year and address any issues, then hopefully you can just get things rolling as the season goes on.

You have to remember as well that Dallas gets the Thanksgiving , short week, long week every year.. which some may argue is almost like a second bye week... albeit after a very short week.

I think the whole two weeks to prepare is overated and in reality teams take a little time off and then work on other pahses of their game or even other opponents during that extra time. For example Dallas usually uses the time to study the team that they will play during Thanksgiving because they will have less time to do it that week.

You're right! But even Sep 24th is early ...the third game! How do you feel about that?

That's an interesting perspective. Actually I've heard a few people express that sentiment.

Now that the league has a balanced amount of teams I feel that the bye week should be eliminated. But that wont happen because it is one more week of precious TV dollars.

I think the Commanders are gonna have the toughest bye game, not just cause i'm a Boys fan. I predict them coming back rusty, not that it matters cause were gonna kill em anyways.

It gives you 2 weeks to prepare for an opponent, instead of 1. I think this more than offsets any lack of continuity.

I like the bye week, I think it should stay.

Sounds like most here are in favor of the Bye-week ...it's almost like the 17th game (unplayed ...where a team niether wins or loses).

Are there any other perspectives?
