I am curious what you guys think is Irving's best position. Does it vary for you based on down or distance?
Is he a starter or a situational player? Let's keep this real.
3-tech because he has enough speed to take advantage of the gap going against a slower guard. Irving is a good combination of quickness, length and strength. Those attributes help him inside where interior linemen are more used to dealing with bulk and power.
At defensive end, he doesn't have the speed to consistently beat tackles, but his length and power help him to do a fairly good job of it. His game is based, though, on getting a first step on the OL and using his length and strength to not let the OL recover.
He does this against both the pass and run, which helps him to be better against the run than many think he is, but also can expose him to blocking like the Eagles used against him, where they let him shoot aggressively upfield and ran through the gap that he vacated.
It think he's a three-down starter, but would tend to not use him in obvious running situations because he has to win off his quickness and length and there are other players who can be used on those downs to save him for opportunities where a pass is more likely. If the OL can get into him where he can't get his arms extended, he can be rooted out. Fortunately, this happens less than it could.
