I am curious what you guys think is Irving's best position. Does it vary for you based on down or distance?

Is he a starter or a situational player? Let's keep this real.

He appears to me to do a bit better at DT than at DE, although he hasn't been afforded a generous number of opportunities at DE to establish himself convincingly. I hope to see him working at both spots during TC to better gauge his play for a comparison of the two positions. I believe he'll be permitted to play in TC and the preseason games, even though he can't play in the 1st 4 regular season games, due to suspension. Looking forward to that.

Irving is a tweener, which is why you don't want to pay him a ton. Excellent situational player.

Would have said starter but now he is suspended he probly won’t be in shape enough to play 3 downs. Is he eligible to practice in camps? He needs to get in shape anyways. If he stayed in shape and didn’t get suspended he was in line for a nice contract. Play him at DT at guess.

Demarcus Lawrence = Michael Strahan
Randy Gregory = Osi Umenyiora
David Irving = Justin Tuck

Tyrone Crawford, Taco Charlton, Jihad Ward, Kony Ealy, Maliek Collins

If a talented and deep defensive line catches fire late in the season, good things usually happen.

physically, the best d-lineman since d.ware. mentally, an *** clown. it's a big shame. this guy could be making millions. he just doesn't appear to be wired right. and unfortunately, rewiring the brain isn't the same as rewiring a stereo.

His production at 3-Tech is hard to beat. Fits what Rod wants at DT to a T imo.
Too bad his lack of maturity is what made him go undrafted.

Think he has enough strength and leverage to be a 3 down 3 tech. Talent is there.

3-tech because he has enough speed to take advantage of the gap going against a slower guard. Irving is a good combination of quickness, length and strength. Those attributes help him inside where interior linemen are more used to dealing with bulk and power.

At defensive end, he doesn't have the speed to consistently beat tackles, but his length and power help him to do a fairly good job of it. His game is based, though, on getting a first step on the OL and using his length and strength to not let the OL recover.

He does this against both the pass and run, which helps him to be better against the run than many think he is, but also can expose him to blocking like the Eagles used against him, where they let him shoot aggressively upfield and ran through the gap that he vacated.

It think he's a three-down starter, but would tend to not use him in obvious running situations because he has to win off his quickness and length and there are other players who can be used on those downs to save him for opportunities where a pass is more likely. If the OL can get into him where he can't get his arms extended, he can be rooted out. Fortunately, this happens less than it could.

He'll be able to practice throughout the preseason before his suspension starts.

Just like Tyrone Crawford but with a better explosion off the ball. Hopefully they learned their lesson with the Crawford contract.

It appears his best position is chief knucklehead - he seems uniquely qualified for that position.
