Giving a 5 year deal to Marcus Spears are you kidding me? :banghead:

He's not a bad player by any means, but giving him a long term deal is idiotic.

he only 28

does his job

that a cheap deal if you ask me

Signed a five-year, $19.2 million contract. The deal contains $4.2 million guaranteed, including a $3.5 million signing bonus

The Spears deal was a favorable one for the club.

Dude I don't give a damn about the money it's the years. You don't give a long term contract to a guy who is average at best. That's just ridiculous. He's not a difference maker. Bad move Jerrah.

If the Patriots' model has taught us anything, it's that you don't extend marginal players.

I would have rather let him walk and contributed the money to a true difference maker.

Spears may have played the most consistence out all of our linemen this year... He's made critical playes. I think the deal is good for the money and the team.

You can't have difference maker at every position. You need good guys that do their job and the dirty work. Marcus Spears LOVES being a Cowboy and he was ecstatic to retire with the star. We need more of those guys on this team.

Thank you.

Spears is an average player. You don't give long term deals to non impact players.

The patriots don't have a lot of difference makers on defefense... In fact, they let above marginal players go. They have a lot of players like Spears that Coach B put in position to make plays.

That's true; however, those players are on their rookie deals and won't be extended because the Pats braintrust will have drafted someone to take their place...cheaply.

Apparently, you have not noticed how poorly NE has drafted the last 3 years. They depend more on FA than the draft, by necessity.

True, but I have noticed that they're 12-3 and have won 3 SB's in the last 10 years while fielding a competitive team almost every year.

Look at this way; Chris Canty was the last decent player Dallas let walk in FA. Do you ever miss him or kick yourself for letting him go?

If people want to applaud the team for signing a player who provides minimal impact then fine, but the Cowboys will not improve until they make drastic upgrades from the defensive line to the secondary. Signing players like Scandrick, Sensabaugh, and Spears may have been cap-friendly, but those players still do not provide the consistent playmaking ability to make the defense a force to be reckoned with. They're all solid players, but they probably won't get much better than what they have shown up to this point in their respective careers.

I'll continue to support them because they wear a star on their helmets, but I don't expect much more than what I have seen from them.

i think the texans gave carr a huge contract and cut him the next year.

there are so many stipulations and clauses that could render a contract meaningless other than guaranteed money.

Yeah, I'm not sure how we'll ever replace the 1 tackle per game and .0625 sack per game averages.

How will we ever replace that kind of production?

And before the "3-4" DEs-don't-get-stats crowd starts crowing, Calais Campbell, Justin Smith and Glen Dorsey, among others, would like a word with you.

I'm so sick of people using "solid" as a measuring stick for DEs, especially one taken in the freaking first round who doesn't even start.

To make me even crazier, Spears is another of the Cowboys Core who has done squat over the last 5+ years.

He cashes checks, gives a good quote or two, then does basically nothing for us, and fans, for some unknown reason, eat it up.

To be fair, he did make a crucial play on third and one earlier this season. Of course, he went completely unblocked, but I'm sure no one noticed that either.

With only a $3.5M bonus and $4.2M guaranteed he can easily be released at any time if the coaches think they can get similar production from a lower cost player.

I actually think Spears has been pretty good this year. I feel he has been more effective than Coleman but hasn't gotten as many snaps. I still think he is our best DE against the run by a fairly wide margin. He is a load at the point of attack and still has a bit of burst.

He is a popular whipping boy here now so I understand the sentiment. I actually am much more critical of the deal given to Oscan than the one given to Spears.

I don't have a problem with it because the deal is cheap as hell, Spears is still in his 20s and does his job. He is not a dominant 3-4 DE but he is a solid space eater.

3-4 DE is not a traditional "difference maker" position. Their job is to take up space and block running lanes. You arent supposed to hear their names very often.

When he starts commanding doubles or even chips then this post will be valid.
