What is my car Worth?

I have a 1996 Nissan Altima with a rebuilt motor, which has a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty on the drive train. The car is in good shape, cosmetically, for an old car. It's a 5 speed with power windows, etc. I'm not sure how to price it. The motor has a little over a 100 miles on it and the odometer reads 146K and some change.

I sold cars for a long time, but never with a rebuilt motor. I'd like to get some money back for the car since my ex-wife blew 5k spiting me and letting some satanic mechanic rip her off at a place called "Christian Brothers" when they rebuilt the motor.

:banghead:

She could have bought two cars and saved a thousand had I been around, but what's done is done.

Help me price this car. I have it for sale for 2,300 and no offers/bites for about 10 days...

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I did that. My price is 2,300. The car comes with a transferable warranty. The guys did a good job, they just charged my ex too much. I haven't gotten any responses about it though. Does 2,300 sound like to much for a car with a 3yr/100k mile warranty?

No idea....I don't buy used cars. I don't want to inherit someone else's problems.

And save the used vs new car speech because it won't change my mind

I never buy new. They depreciate. I don't give speeches though. In any case, I think I'll have to put a for sale sign on it and see what happens.

True but I'd rather pay for a car that hasn't been dogged out. I'd prefer to do the dogging. I feel sorry for whoever bought my old cars. :laugh2:

Yes, because the engine isn't the only thing that's a concern for a 15 year old car that's been driven for over 146K miles. That exhaust system, the power train and tranny have 15 years/146K miles on them as do the other parts and electronics and that has to be considered even by the most casual buyer.

2300 is a nice downpayment for a car with no repairs for a while, where as 2300 for a 15 year old car that's likely going to have repairs even if they're not major is still possibly a money pit.

I honestly don't think you will find anyone willing to pay 2300 for a car that old, but you never know, just consider why you're not getting calls in the meantime. If you're looking to sell fast take it down, if you have time keep it at 2300 and hope.

Having sold cars, I just find them to be a waste of money. I usually don't have a car payment. I don't want one. The money I save there allows me to get my cars worked on and also... not have a car payment. I loathe debt.

Yeah, but anything that needs repairs that would likely be costly would be covered. In any case, I get your point. 1,999 is what I have it for now. The ex put almost 6k into it.

But the warranty only covers the motor right? Not the transmission, battery, brake system, etc.

The 1 in the 1,999. probably helps the psychological element though. Seeing the 1 instead of a 2 already makes it seem cheaper. :laugh2:
Someone's going to haggle any way, so you'll get more than if you had asked 800-900 up front.

I believe so, I had them do some free work on the clutch just by going up there and telling them I knew how evil they were and that I'd expose them for being crooked. I'm still a little hot about them charing so much for the work and they didn't feel like arguing with me after about 15 minutes of seeing how sometimes I don't shut up when I'm onto something. LOL

Where'd you list it?

I sold an older car on the Auto-Trader website a few months ago. I only got one reply, but that one reply was a sale. I revised my price a little lower than what I started at, but it was still more than what I would have taken to get rid of it. Don't set the price at the amount you need to make it work. Set it higher, knowing they are going to try to haggle you down.

Edmunds has a list of '96 Altima's and their price values. See how yours stacks up.

I'm familiar with all the haggling. I do it on both sides, buying and selling. But here the rebuilt motor is throwing me off. It adds some value. Otherwise, I'd ask 1,500 and take 1,300. But I think I'm only going to take around 1,800. Ah, someone will need an old car that has some warranty on it if anything goes wrong.

Warranties aren't cheap.

A 15 year old car generally means the AC sucks or is non-existent. :laugh2:

New cars. More comfort, more safety, usually lower gas mileage, AC rocks, power doors, locks, and windows actually work. I could keep going!
