What is the ceiling on Jaylon Smith?

Last year, I thought he'd be lucky to ever play in a real game. Now, all signs are pointing up.

IF that's the case and all the signs are pointing up, how far up are they pointing? What is the ceiling on this guy at this point?

I think the sky is the limit. For all practical purpose this is his rookie season and being away from the game for since Jan 1st 2016 it will take some trial by fire to learn and develop. I do expect a full recovery and I think the kid has the skill and intelligence to be an outstanding player. Right now keep working and hang with Lee

I've heard it mentioned several times that JS is Luke Kuechly.

I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I'll go with that.

If you are waiting for him to reach his ceiling then you need to wait to hear he does not have hard plastic on the back of his foot anymore.

Don't trust the braintrust at the DFW media to figure it out.

DROY

His skills remind me of Lavonte David. He's a little taller and has a faster 40 time, so deduce from that what you wish.

His skillset is the same as Brian Urlacher, though he's not really as violent because he's smaller.

Jason Garrett said from day one, ever since the draft. Jaylon made progress every single day. Not once did he ever regress.
He said he can honestly say that too. Just not saying it.

So I expect this will continue. The thing is how was his foot on Monday, or today. Did it, and if so, how fatigued is it. What is his recovery time.
We will see how he does in Denver. But I feel he will be fine. If he gets through these next few games, and improves each game, and his snap count is about the same, or even goes up. the sky / limit is as high as he makes it to be.

Even if he has less snaps, because of the game dictation as it goes, doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Looking for his progression each week.

Michael Irvin said that Luke Kuechly was the white Ray Lewis and that Jaylon was the black Luke Kuechly. He wasn't the only one making the Kuechly comparison. Which in my mind is he can be Sean Lee with more athletic ability.

When he catches up with the speed of the NFL game, it could be very impressive. I saw quick closing on plays and impact when he arrived. In the near future, when he's reacting and moving even sooner, that speed will allow him to arrive before the play can develop... similar to Sean Lee. Smith looked really good for his first game... just a little late before turning on that speed.

The Cowboys view him as a cornerstone type of player. Wouldn't have taken a player with a high 2nd round pick that would have to sit out his first year otherwise.

The likelihood is that even if his foot doesn't improve he will get better as he gets used to the game speed and angles. He still has overrun a few plays...not sure if that is a function of not being able to stop as quick as he could before or just because he has been away from live action. Either way, he played well the other night and if that is what we get the rest of the season it will be good. If he gets better, it's just frosting on the cake right now.

Marinelli envisions him as another Derrick Brooks.
