If we go over the roster, position by position, I think the youth has talent and decent attitude. It desperately needs coaching and leadership. Other than Oline, not including players 30 or over.
On offense:
Romo (not really a spring chicken at 29, but "inexperience" or hopefully still coachable = eliminate the big turnovers and he's a top 5 qb in league)
Barber/Choice/Jones
Great stable of young RB's, each of which has different strengths, each of which seems to be able to run AND block AND catch, so each could be very close to an every down back if needed. Great attitudes too it seems.
Austin/Roy Williams
There is a worry at WR. Is Roy Williams the heir apparent to #1 WR on this team or is he going to be an underachiever. Will Austin make that next step and stay healthy. He looks promising. Stanback and Hurd don't make the cut, yet! But Hurd is a decent (he's still SUPER young) utility guy with great attitude (knows every WR position apparently, and excellent hustling special teams - and he's cheap - potential 5th or 6th spot WR with experience at young age). Stanback has so many injury issues and is still going through the transition. Probably a longshot now.
Witten and Bennett
Awesome combo of still very young probowler in Witten, and amazing athletic potential in Bennett (coaching please).
Gurode/Davis/Columbo/Kosier
I'd say these guys aren't young, but Oline can often play into mid/late 30's. Flo doesn't make the "young nucleus) cut due to age, but I'm guessing he's on roster for 2 more years minimum (I still think his pass blocking when healthy is strong). Focus, conditioning, and consistent aggressiveness needs to be instilled. Tall order, but potential is there. These guys need personal trainers all year. Focus that beef into blocking terrors!
Not sure if they make the cut:
Crayton (isn't he 30?). Decent 3rd WR and PR. At right price, solid roster guy (keep quiet though please and just focus on play.
Cricket Anderson. Crazy attitude needed for special teams and lead tank, but inconsistent (IMHO) and makes some key mistakes. Can we upgrade here. Doesn't run or catch much, so I wonder if that roster spot, or more importantly position on starting 11 on offense could be improved.
Holland. Showed some potential. Free (probably most promising backup, but can he step up - next year last shot?)
Decent nucleus on offense I think. Needs to be coached into WINNERS and executers under pressure.
Needs: young Oline to develop, speedy/quick WR for short to mid routes that can then make some YAC, make people miss. Developmental 3rd QB (please draft!).
Someone wanna do defense?
Special teams:
Our Punter and Kicker rock and hopefully will be with us for long, long time. Kickoffs could be improved on. Austin and Felix are strong kick returners. Crayton is a decent backup punt returner. Maybe the speedy/quick WR we need could also be the #1 punt returner = I'm thinking DeShaun Jackson from Phili in terms of talent/production would be a very nice complementary addition to offense and special teams (sans attitude/maturnity issues even better). I'm worried about Newman as a punt returner just because he's fragile, but in key situations maybe if healthy.
