I hope they get it right this time! For a change!
We're talking about a pure nose tackle A1 tech that's great at what they do at just being a one tech not these hybrid tweeners that are really 3 tax and move around in a lot of defenses I think you have to have dumb luck to find one of those in the draft because I don't think you can signal one out and then they turn into greatness.

So many fan bases do not understand what a real one tech a pure nose tackle is and I don't think there's any work taking in the first round when you look at most of them split snaps 5050 with somebody else sometimes only see about 35% of the snaps 'cause these big dudes need to take time to catch your breath get some rest and they're usually rotated on every team unless you stumbled upon an accidental can't miss just start of a nose tackle and there aren't many of those coming out the draft and don't mistake these little hybrid tweeners that are moving around the line for a nose tackle that is not what that is and the fact that he's being moved into three tech often makes him not really a pure nose tackle

show me all the actual pure nose tackles taken in the last 10 years in the draft and tell me where they were picked and how they're doing now and I wanna see their snap count at one tech pure nose tackle not all the snaps that they played at other positions along the line..

guys like vince wolffort don't come around very often..

JAG. A depth guy.

Likely won’t get a second contract unless he’s cheap.

Go take some Midol
Nope I stand by it if you don't like the poll question make your own and then you can answer however you want if not stick to either answering so this doesn't go off track you don't get a third choice how about that

He’s a grey area player, I think he’ll get a second contract. Nothing like Trysten Hill or Taco Charlton.

If he ends up being a 7-8 year Cowboy, is that a bust for a late 1st?
He could end up like Vander Esch. Staying because he is a starter on a sub starter contract.

As far as being a bust even if he is hear 7/8 years, depends on his level of play. LVE was here 6 and Id call him a bust. Most of his career LVE was a sub average player at his position. For any first round pick Id consider that a bust

I think he will be a solid rotational contributor, could be more. Does he get a 2nd contract here? At this moment no but will have to see how the rest of the season plays out and if he can deliver more of what we saw in the Giants game.

I think he will get one just because it might not be very expensive. Dallas likes to keep their own. Especially if they are cheap. They kept bring back Vander Esch despite better players being available

Thus far in his career, Mazi Smith seems destined to gradually develop into a reliable DT to serve the Cowboys for many years to come. For some, it simply takes time, while others get there much faster. The nature of his progress is incrementally achieved over time. He'll get there, given due time to develop. His position isn't one in which his progress is inclined to be expedient. It's just a very gradual process, like it or not. ;)

I think he will be a middle of the road decent DT. For all the post about him people forget he was pick at 26. That’s basically a 2nd round pick. We act like he was picked top 10. He was never dominant in college. I don’t know why we thought he would be in the NFL.
This is the best jerry-justification yet.

A pick in the mid 20's is "basically a 2nd rd pick".

And hey, a 2nd is basically a 3rd, and a lot of times when I go to hold up 3 fingers I accidentally hold up 4 because it's so close, and since 4 calling birds is basically 5 golden rings, we basically got Mazi with a 7th rounder.

Undrafted Free Agent when you think about it.

HA HA HA.

I'm thinking either Lowe's or Home Depot in the garden department. Although home appliances does have a path to move up.

Neither. I think he will be a contributor this year. I'm not sure he'll develop past that and may be replaced next season.

That said I'm a lot more optimistic than I was before. There is at least a possibility he grows into a fine 1 tech.

I think DQ set him back and last year was a lost season. He's basically a second year rookie.
You pretty much nailed it.

I think he will probably end up a replacement-level DT that can give you some ok snaps but overall is not a player you necessarily will keep around long term. I actually think they may keep him around after his rookie deal is up because he’ll probably be pretty cheap to resign and we love our draft picks.

For a first rounder I suppose you could call that a bust, but not in the total flame out car crash sense of the word like it was with Taco Charlton.

After the way McCarthy and Quinn screwed him up last year it appears he is making progress now.
No.Quinn didn't screw him up. His grades are nearly as lame as last year (correction: on the year he's actually *worse* than last year! One good game, 4 horrible!)

Mazi is allergic to the techniques he is taught. He tires easily, and he is slow off the ball. Odds for absolute bust: 70% at this point.
